Google gives up on US carriers - RCS Update Live in Play Store/Rolling Out

I don't want RCS. I don't want a messaging system that cannot be backed-up then restored after factory reset or device replacement.

I use SyncTech Pty Ltd's SMS Backup & Restore utility every night to save my SMS/MMS messages to my Google Drive. If I need to replace my phone I can restore my entire SMS/MMS history compete with picture attachments.

Google's cloud will automatically back up the text of SMS/MMS messaging, but will not back up and restore the picture attachments. Google Pixel Support suggests we can extract the pictures from the messages, save them to the photo gallery and Google cloud will back them up from there, but it is not acceptable to lose the context of those pictures in our conversations.

When will RCS backup/restore be supported by Google or a third party app? If you adopt RCS before backup/restore support is available you're saying it's okay to lose your messaging history whenever disaster strikes.

I mean this is really because folks treat SMS, MMS, and now RCS like email when it's not email.

Ive followed all the steps from the video and got it working on my s10. When I tried it on my Key2LE in Activity Launcher, I am unable to open the top menu to select "all activity". In "Set RCS flags" I an unable to open that to make the two changes to that. that phone is on Android 8.1. The Activity Launcher version is the same on both phones

My wife's Moto G6 had RCS installed and waiting to be turned on.... just like it had the call screen feature ready to go out of the box. And I just turned her RCS on and within seconds it was ready to go. Pretty impressive for a $160 phone lol. With my pixel I had to troubleshoot to get RCS turned on.... the problem ended up being that for some reason my carrier services had disabled itself, so I had to pull it up in the play store, enable it, then update it over wifi (which it demanded), then it turned on and works fine. Kinda sad when a budget Moto device gets the same features as a flagship pixel and they work better :O

Moto may screw the pooch when it comes to updates, but they make nice phones for the money.... especially when you get them on sale. My wife's a power user and she loves her phone, it'll out last mine on battery life.
