Hey guys I really like Google hangouts SMS feature but its not showing any contact images. I didn't have this problem with the Nexus 5 and my girlfriend doesn't have this problem with her Galaxy S4.

Any ideas on how to handle this situation.

My contact images are showing fine. Maybe try and reinstall it?

I uninstalled the update then reinstalled it from the Play store and it wouldn't allow SMS at all on version 2.0.128. So I downloaded 2.0.122 from Android Police then updated to 2.0.128 from the Play Store and all seems fine. Not sure what fixed it but its working now lol.

One more question regarding hangouts. How do I make it send MMS while using wifi calling.

Anyone else having issues with this? Only one of my SMS message threads is showing the contact photo; the rest just have the generic contact photo. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Hangouts 2.x update but it didn't help. All the missing ones are in my Google contacts and they have contact pictures there.

All the Hangouts message threads have the correct contact pictures but only 1 of the SMS threads has the contact picture. AT&T branded Note 3, stock and unrooted.

EDIT - Guess it's working as designed. See here. I guess it's only designed to pull in the Google+ contact photo. Lame. Sure would be nice if it were smart enough to pull from Facebook but I can see that they're trying to drive traffic to G+.

I don't know how I feel about that zzoinks. Mine is working fine with Facebook [Friendcaster actually] images. I use Friendcaster only for the images and choose not to use official Facebooks system.

VW FTW ;-)

Hmm you might be on to something. I installed Haxsync like I had used on my Nexus 4 and cleared data from Hangouts. It got a little better. More of the conversations were showing a contact picture, but not all.

In the end I'm going back to the Samsung messaging app. It just works, no work arounds or hacks needed. Maybe Hangouts will get there some day, but not yet.

Thanks,
-Brett.

PS - Nice CC!

Mine was weird. When I initially installed it the Hangouts update, none of my contacts were showing up. I played with my wife's and a friends phone number and still nothing. Then I rebooted and all the contact images worked except for the two that I had messed with the phone numbers.

I followed the advice above and uninstalled the Hangouts updated, looked at the SMS messages and the pictures were back. Reinstalled updates the pictures stayed. All is fixed! Thanks!

Ok I've spent countless hours trying to sort this out on my Note II. I tried everything suggested, nothing worked.

Until I went in to a conversation and tapped on the drop down box where the number is displayed top left. It had an option "Add to people". That alllows you to save that number to a contact. I noticed that the number that Hangouts auto inserted was the same number but with the country code. Instead of saving a duplicate entry though, I deleted the one Hangouts inserted and just added the +44 to the original number for the contact. When I saved this, the contacts image displays correctly. I updated several other numbers with the country code and now their images display.

So the problem seems to be that Hangouts won't recognise numbers as linked to a contact without the country code.

Update: ok adding the country code doesn't seem to solve the problem. What does is tapping the "add to people" and choosing a contact. You don't need to complete the adding of the number, just initiate the process.

A lil off topic... But hangout SUCKS. WITH ALL the Google services and money backing this app... you would think there would be seamless integration..... With just not the stock sms/mms but with the rest of the Google phone apps

I'm glad there isn't. I like to think of the Google apps as staying optional and even being removable without root would be better. I hate large centralized systems.

Apple got it right with iMessage IMHO. I don't really understand Google's reasoning for separating SMS and Hangouts conversations with the same contact. Why not just do what iMessage does and lets you send via either, adding a little "SMS" or "iMessage" footnote to the message within the conversation or colour code it like iMessage does. One reason I can only assume is because iMessage on runs on one operating system across devices, it's obviously easier to determine who can and cannot receive an iMessage. Whereas Android comes in various skins across various devices.

some of my contacts wouldnt show up correctly. When in that contact message window I pushed t the menu button in the top left corner and unmerged the contact it got rid of the email address and the picture displayed instantly.
