Google Maps question (ver 8.4.1)

When I am in "auto" navigation (the little car on the top left of the screen) everything is fine. But when I go into walking mode (the little walking man at the top right) the display constantly rotates around and does not seem to point either towards the destination or in the direction I'm walking. Can anyone tell me how to use this?

The little compass icon will start/stop the screen from rotating.

ok, thanks. I will try this. what is it showing me when it is rotating?

I think it's trying to orient the map towards your direction, hence the compass. But I don't use that feature so I'm not certain.
