"Following your progress", as in real time Navigation, will use some data. Just finding yourself one time on a map uses less.

It's a very easy experiment to do: turn off your mobile data connection and take a drive around the neighborhood and you'll see what the limits are to how Google Maps will work for you.

Google maps alternate route

I've been trying to get Google maps to using alternate route. I can see the icon that select alternate route but the map still follow the original route. What am i doing wrong. Thanks

How do you turn off sound in Google Maps without disabling the sound on the Samsung.

I have been trying to use alternate routes in Google maps for a week now and I'm totally frustrated. Please Help.

I'm sorry but I don't quite understand what your problem is... Can you not see the alternate routes? Or cannot select them for your navigation?

If you want to disable the turn by turn navigation prompts, you can do this while navigating. Just pull up the menu and there should be a button saying MUTE VOICE NAVIGATION (or something like that).

Can you post a screenshot? I'm not seeing that on mine (granted, it's a Note 4, but Google Maps is not a phone-dependent app, so it should be the same experience).

Or maybe share the starting point/destination you're trying to map out?

There used to be a setting in Google maps that if I clicked in the lower right corner to bring up the alternate route selection but it's no longer available.

Nope, not anymore. Now when you search for directions it'll give you a list of routes. If you tap on any one, that'll bring you to map view with your selected route highlighted and the other ones in gray. If you tap on an alternative route on the map you should be able to select that route. Only until you hit the START NAVIGATION button will the alternative routes disappear and your navigation locks up to the selected route.

I love Google maps. It would be easier if RESTAURANT, HOTELS etc, would be overlays that can be added or removed as needed

MyDirections-Google Map ext. makes that really simple, if you don't mind typing in the name and address. It's like a contact list for Maps.

How can you leave the overlay of hotels, gas stations, on a map that's displaying the navigation route., the overlay disappears when navigation begins.

I am not sure that you can. Seems kind of strange that you can't if you are going a long distance. But at the same time, if you are going that far, I think you can print off maps with stops on the way.
