Google Maps is one awesome program. I'm using it now on a trip from Clayton New Jersey to Jupiter Florida. We are staying at various motels and eating at various restaurants. I know your app has the ability to list gas stations, motels
, restaurants etc. My only wish is that they those items can be left on the navigation screen while we're driving, so I can tell where these are located and don't have to change all the settings just to get those listings. What do you think? Thanks. 1

Google Maps enhancement

I think Google Maps is by far the most efficient mapping program there is. I do have one suggestion that I have forwarded via feedback, to Google Maps. They have not responded. I understand that they will probably get millions of feedback just about every day so they can't respond to each individual request. My suggestion is this Google Maps has the ability to map motels, hotels, restaurants, and other points of interest. They work fine. But when you get into a travel mode or route mode, the overlay disappears. I would like to see the overlay stay on the navigation screen. What do you think?

When you're navigating, you're not looking for a hotel or a restaurant, you're looking to get to "point B". Maybe a way to hop back and forth between navigation mode and overlay mode, like you can move around and have a Resume button - pop up the overlay, but with a resume button..

Not sure you finished your post. When I am navigating I'm also checking for the location of motels. When I list the motels the navigation screen disappears. There is no Resume button. resume is only in the navigation screen. Did I miss something here? As always thanks for your help.

I had an update to Google Maps, a couple of days ago...

Version...9.9.0 (#909010124)

Don't know if that is the one you are referring to. I think this was a Smart Watch compatibility update.

To check your version... Google Maps > Menu (3 bars) > Settings > About, terms & privacy > Version

No. The update that I read about displays alternative routes, reason for the rerouting, congestion etc. The article said that it was going to be issued on Memorial Day weekend. I haven't received it yet. Anyone else?

Hey if you are still out there i have a different problem with alternate route. what do you do on an android (galaxy S5 if it matters) when it does not show the alternate route you desire. (this blows my mind because it is an obvious highway based route. i can't force it by choosing tolls or highways because both routes are highways without tolls. In the good old days you just dragged the route yourself. But i cannot get anything like that to work. I just drove off the route it was navigating and it immediatley pops up the route i want, but i wanted to look at the transit times before i chose a route and was unable to do so! this is easy on a laptop but does not seem implemented on the phone .

Welcome to Android Central!

When you put in the address and get the directions it should give you options for multiple ways to that point. They will be gray vs highlighted on the map, you just have to tap on the other route.

This post is just an addendum to the previous alternate route Recently, I was following a selected route that google maps determined was my best route. During the travel, a traffic jam developed ahead of my route. It selected a different route. I followed it and it saved me much time. I knew I loved google maps, but this just reinforced it.

It actually does this automatically, too. Asks you about it first though. It will pop out a message saying something like 'there's a faster route available now, do you want to take it?' or 'even with traffic conditions, you are on the fastest route'

Still some very useful features from the desktop version that haven't made it to mobile, but still a VERY useful app indeed.

Not sure why I didn't see this one before, I apologize. On mobile, unfortunately, you cannot change the suggested routes because you can't add waypoints (which is what your'e doing on the desktop when you modify the route). When requesting directions on mobile between to locations, if you tap the map (not the NAVIGATE NOW button) from the fastest route it suggests, you will see the options it has in its system. If it doesn't, for some reason that route might not be considered as neither the fastest, shortest, or best.

I didn't see the automatic warning because each other routes that I've taken before have never had a problem. The advanced warning is a wonderful feature. I followed it the last time and it saved me a considerable amount of time. Thanks again

And it's getting smarter! Now if you look for directions from an appointment or to a certain restaurant, it'll tell you if your route will get you there in time or if you'll be late or if the restaurant/venue is closed by the time you reach your destination.
