Google Navigation Volume

Ran all the way to MD and back this weekend with it in the cradle, nav vol cranked to max. Heard it just fine (although no radio playing, I was streaming pandora which pauses for nav directions) However, I'm assuming that somewhere in those menus egg_head is tooling around in is a setting for the nav/media/music whatever volume. The speaker is a fixed output hw wise, so I would venture to guess that bumping up the max on the last step would increase the volume.

I've tried a few things, like all those TEMP1 - TEMP4 settings as well as the MIDI setting in the *#28346#>situation menu, nada.

I found navigator through the aux input in my stereo is fine. However I noticed the other day with music playing and navigator running I couldn't answer phone calls. The music would dim nicely for the nav directions and then start back up just like its supposed to. If I got a call it would show up, but I couldn't answer with the audio cable plugged in. I tried unplugging the audio cable and it hung up my phone call instantly. Is this a known issue?

I've noticed that the phone tends to "prefer" the headset-jack for all audio when it is connected... ie: when I have my audio cable connected, listening in my vehicle.. When a Call comes in, the "BLUETOOTH" connection to my vehicle gets no audio (nothin in or out). I have to unplug the headset for bluetooth to function properly... definitely a terrible bug.

I've never had it automatically hang up on me... are you sure the other party didn't hang up due to "dead air" once you answered? (ie: if they would have held on for a couple more seconds they would have heard your voice when you unplugged headset)??

Unfortunately, I also don't see any way within Tasker to "disable headset when a call is received" ... that would be nice.

This was driving me nuts, but I finally found a solution! You don't need root or anything to fix, but you do have to enable the secret hidden menu, then adjust a few settings. To enable to hidden menu and access the "audio tuning" settings go here:

http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate/37578-android_secret_code-string-revealed.html

Once you access the audio tuning menu, select "stream", and then select which setting you want to adjust, either headset, speaker, or earpiece. Once inside, you will want to adjust the "SYSTEM" setting. Google nav uses the system volume setting for it's navigation volume, so this what needs to be adjusted. I have mine set as follows in both stream_speaker and stream_headset settings and it is much louder:

step0 = 0
step1 = 58
step2 = 65
step3 = 72
step4 = 79
step5 = 86
step6 = 93
step7 = 100
dbStep = 0.5

Default values (for stream_speaker settings) were:
step0 = 0
step1 = 29
step2 = 35
step3 = 41
step4 = 47
step5 = 53
step6 = 59
step7 = 65
dbStep =0.5

By contrast, the speakerphone maximum setting is 86, so if these values are percentages, the navigation volume was 21% lower than the speakerphone volume.

I listen to the music player in my car, and when navigating, the turn by turn directions were barely audible over the music player. The default maximum system volume setting was 65. The maximum music volume setting was 98. This is why I had to listen to music at half volume in order to have the nav volume be equal, even though the nav volume was at max. I hope this helps and I will be posting this elsewhere to help as much people out as I can.

Went and tested that fix for the GPS volume really quickly last night, but was quickly irritated by the very loud system clicks.

As the system sound effects are all based on step7, I ended up lowering that value down to 65 and setting step6 to 100.

I have no idea what that does to the Nav volume, though. It doesn't get quieter at max setting or anything, but the system sounds are no longer making me cringe every time I click an icon, either.

Anyone know how that works?

which one is for the bluetooth? I am using the a2dp streaming on my car stereo. Me too i got annoyed by the loud clicking so I put it back to default

I made these changes and am ecstatic that now I finally have a GPS I can hear. I already thanked the poster but am so happy I also wanted to post.

Thank you!

Same here, hopefully someone knows the fix...

Did you try going into settings and turning down system sound from there? Every once in a while I have to readjust mine (prior to messing w the hidden menu)

Oh wow...you are right. I didn't notice it. I don't use navigate so much that it's a hardship for me to go in and turn it back down, but I see the complaint.

The only other volume issue I have is the phone calls when routed out through the headset to an auxilary in on stereo...the volume of the phone calls are very soft and I have to turn the radio up to full volume to hear the other person.

How is it that these volumes got so messed up to begin with? I don't see a bunch of people complaining about the Epic or Captivate (or Vibrant).

Go into Settings then Sound & Display. Scroll down & uncheck Audible Selection. That clicking gets kind of irritating. Hope this helps.

I'm only gonna use it a handful of times a year, so no biggie. Just wondered if there was a fix besides turning the clicks off..

If you want to experiment a bit, try setting step7 to 65 or so, and step6 to 100. The clicks are quieter, and the nav volume doesn't seem to decrease.

That said, I don't understand how the system handles such illogical volume settings, and I haven't been able to play with it enough to really figure out how it works, yet.

Also, thanks for the tip, Sublym. I'd rather like to avoid muting the clicks entirely, though. :P
