Google Nexus 5 - Phone volume and speakerphone

I placed my first call after signing up with AIO. I am hearing impaired and a hearing aid user. I was not able to hear the person on the other end. I wondered if using the speaker phone would help but I can't find a speakerphone setting. Is there one? Could the fact that I only have 2 bars showing for AIO have anything to do with the sound volume?

Hopefully Google will offer a complete manual sometime soon.
