Google Nexus 6 Its the end of the Nexus brand

Re: Its the end of the Nexus brand

I was so happy to see a powerful player like Google stand up to the carriers -- by promoting unlocked phones -- not sold through the carriers -- at a very competitive price.
I was too, but the market didn't respond. People (in the US at least) still stuck to buying their phones from carriers, either through contracts or through payment plans. Google's strategy with the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 5 was good and honorable, but it didn't work in terms of selling phones. So Google has decided to retool, get the carriers on board, and launch it as a premium device priced still well for devices in that range, but high enough to get attention.

I don't blame them for that.

Maybe they need a partner like Lenovo and expand it more outside US where unlocked phones are more accepted.

Yeah but they wouldn't see the sales they get with the U.S. Apples gets millions of customers from the U.S. and so does Samsung to ignore the U.S. carriers is foolish as we are one of the biggest markets. Google realizes that and now we have the first Verizon nexus since the Galaxy Nexus. U.S. carriers plus international availability unlocked means someone is going to be making money. I can't wait to see some TV ads about the Nexus 6.

I wish Google had gone the Apple route and at least offered different size devices.

It's called the Moto x. The N6 and Moto x are basically the same design. Since the N6 is on all carriers, they're not going to have a Moto x look alike along side it.

Re: Its the end of the Nexus brand

Its US carriers we're talking about, esp Verizon. We should have concerns. There's only one company that's been able to get the carriers to do its bidding, and that's Apple. They were able to do it because of the iPhone's massive sales volume. The Nexus is the exact opposite, it barely sells. Expecting carriers to do the right thing by the consumer is naive.

No carrier can hold up any updates because there aren't any carrier specific skus. There is only an America's model which is XT1103 and a global model which is XT1100. No specific model that can be held up by a carrier equals faster updates.

Only way you're keeping unlimited data on Verizon is if you pay full price. You upgrade at Verizon then that unlimited data is done for.

Yes they can, if updates come from carrier servers. And Verizon can always claim it has to certify the CDMA portion in addition.

21stNow scratches head, checks calendar. No, it's not April 1st.

Is this a serious thread?

Re: My buying decision comes down to this

It'll be $49.99 on contract for AT&T.

I thought I had read AT&T listed that price by mistake.. They had that price and "Nexus 6" listed but a picture of the LG G3 Vigor and the Vigor is $49.99 on contract..... I doubt they will actually sell this on contract for $49.99 but maybe I am wrong....

You're probably right, I don;t think they would make a phone this good that cheap.

Sorry, I don't share your concerns. This is really quite easy. If I like the phone, I will buy the phone. If I don't like the phone, I will not buy the phone. That's it! No worries, concerns, tears, nervous anticipation or anything else that is remotely negative.

And if I had concerns that deep about Verizon Wireless, I wouldn't do business with them.

Re: My buying decision comes down to this

1. Contract pricing - $50 would be awesome but unrealistic
2. An assurance from Google that since all NA carriers have the same model, they'll all
a) be unlocked
b) get updates direct from Google with no delays, or 'certification' (looking at you Verizon)
3. Ability to keep unlimited data while upgrading on Verizon on new contract
4. Reviews say nothing bad about camera/battery life

Looking forward to buying it soon!

Please let us know when/if you have those assurances. I'm not up for paying $650 for the Nexus 6, as much as I like it, so I'm hoping for the same scenario and to be able to buy it locally from AT&T (or maybe Best Buy on contract with AT&T).

For $50.00 on contract I'd probably have to at least look into AT&T.. Their coverage is amazing in Dallas... but I only pay $30 a month with T-Mobile with pretty awesome coverage and speeds..... so even at $650 unlocked from the play store I'd save just staying with T-Mobile vs $50 down and about $80 per month to get the same amount of high speed data (I get unlimited data but only 5 gig at 4G LTE...)

Re: My buying decision comes down to this

Like I said in another thread, $50 on contract is unlikely, then you can just but it and pay ETF to save $250.

THIS THIS THIS. People complaining about Google needing to put out two Nexus phones like Apple need to open their eyes. We already have this year's smaller Nexus. It's the friggin' Moto X. It's the same phone as the Nexus 6, but smaller and a little lower specs. Buy the Pure Edition and there IS NO BLOAT. It will get updated nearly as fast as any Nexus device, and is basically stock Android with just a few app tweaks. This is almost identical to what Apple did with the 6 and 6+.

Re: Its the end of the Nexus brand

Stop right there.

What you think or want or believe is irrelevant. A Nexus is not "about" anything other than what Google says and/or wants it to be.

You are wrong. Brand identity is extremely important and what customers think of a brand matters.

Google could say Android=pink fluffy elephant tomorrow, that doesn't mean everyone else will.

Re: Its the end of the Nexus brand

The Nexus "Brand" in my eyes has been and always will be un-bloated stock android experience the way Google intended it to be.... Was really only with the Nexus 4 that it became a way cheaper than we were use to phone.... before that and now it's been an middle to upper middle of the road (price wise) device.....

$649 starting price was a little sticker shock for me.... but acceptable when you start to run down the spec sheet and compare it to other phablet/flagship devices... and now you have the top 5 carriers all saying they WILL carry it so you can easily lock yourself into a contract with a carrier you enjoy being with (and most people have been with their carrier for YEARS and YEARS now) for what will probably be $199 - 299 down...

Brand identity is important. However, Google is the one that is responsible for establishing and maintaining that brand. Whatever any of us want to call the Nexus brand is irrelevant. Google has created the Nexus 6. You can take it or leave it. Either way, the Nexus 6 will be the Nexus 6.

That's true for all US carriers except Verizon (and Sprint, I suppose). If I want an unlocked bootloader and the ability to root on Verizon, I have ONE choice...Nexus 6. MAYBE the Droid Turbo, on the infinitesimal chance it gets a Developer Edition. We have no DevEd Moto X (2014), no Pure Edition, no Google Play Editions...we get what Verizon allows us to get, which is locked down phones loaded with bloatware. I have a Droid MAXX Developer Edition now, and while I'll miss the Moto X features (Voice, Display, etc.)....I'll gladly trade that for a QuadHD 6" pure Nexus that will truly work on all US carriers, and even most European carriers (I travel there for work quite a bit).
