re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

Read all of that thread on Sprint's forum. Posters are reporting that if a phone wasn't purchased directly from the Play Store or Sprint, that Sprint will NOT allow the phone. Perhaps there are people who have had success and they aren't complaining, but I purchased directly from the Play Store and wouldn't risk purchasing from T-Mobile intending to bring that phone to Sprint.

Yeah I wouldn't take the risk.... If you are on Sprint and you love Sprint... get it from the play store or from Sprint..... Safest best... I mean if you can go buy it at T-Mobile and try knowing you can return it go for it.. Heck you might even be able to find a good sucker on Ebay willing to pay too much for the new in box T-Mobile version.......

Re: When will the play store allow more orders for the N6?

You either need or don't need 64.... and you know if you do or not.... If you don't know... You don't....

If you don't know, you're basically paying whatever part of that $50 you won't be able to recoup when you sell the device to ensure you don't find yourself in a position where the 32GB device is not sufficient for your needs.

Truth be told, a 16GB device can be sufficient for nearly anyone. There's always the cloud, USB OTG, etc... What you're paying for is really just the luxury of being able to store more locally on the device itself. The only reason I can think of that one would actually need more is if one would record a single, continuous video at 4k of extreme duration to a point that the local storage simply isn't enough.

Buy what makes you happy and serves your needs... It's $50 and at the end of the day you are going to pay $700 - 750 (after taxes) for something you might be able to sell for $250 - 300 in 2 years if you are lucky.... Hopefully you got $400 - 500 of use out of the device and it served you well enough that when you sell or pass it on to someone else you can say "Man that was an awesome device." and then you'll instantly get distracted by your new shiny object.....

re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

Same hardware, NOT same software. Verizon can block IMEI's of all devices sold via TMobile, AT&T etc, and most likely will. Devices sold on Play Store will have their IMEI whitelisted.

This is an important distinction many people fail to grasp.

Where are you getting this different software from? Whitelisting IMEI's doesn't change the phone software.

If Sprint is looking to restrict, it's not absurd to speculate that Verizon may as well...
...snip

That Sprint employee seems a bit misinformed. Last year you could easily buy the N5 from Google play and activate it on Sprint, in the same way you could purchase the N7 and (eventually) activate it on Verizon. It may not be as simple as dropping a SIM in, but it works.

Whether the Sprint rep - who in the thread indicated having confirmed the policy he cited with his supervisor - was right or wrong (and yes, the supervisor could have as easily been wrong), 'Joe Consumer' isn't going to know that. They're going to hear "you can't" and decide what to do from there. If it takes the majority of people that much effort to convince a rep that what they're being trained on is wrong, then to go through the hurdle of having their device whitelisted, it's not 'easy' to activate. I imagine they could have made it a very simple process but instead elected to deter the practice for some reason.

You'd think with another $700 million in losses and a net loss of 270k subscribers in the last quarter Sprint wouldn't be all that worried about where you got your phone... If it works on our network...... Welcome aboard.. here is your first months bill...... (Specially if you are paying up front on a prepaid plan)

Verizon can be a little more picky as they are making money.....

I get what you are saying, but Joe Consumer is much more likely to buy the phone directly from the carrier than Google Play. It's people like us who visit tech forums that care about a phone being easily activated on any network when the bands allow. Additionally, we are the ones who are more likely to buy a device that is SIM unlocked. The average cell phone buyer tends to just walk into a store and purchase a device from the store. Google isn't going to care about IMEI's being whitelisted on all networks when a person buys it from a carrier. They are only going to care that a customer purchases the Nexus 6.

I think people in this thread need to just relax a little bit. We will make our informed decisions once all information is available. Joe Consumer will just continue to purchase his or her cell phones like normal. All we can hope is that he or she selects the Nexus 6 rather than something else.

And how do you know this? The phone is not even out yet. Since when did Verizon ever block an entire line of devices from another carrier?

All of this is absurd speculation until the phone is in the average user's hands.

Verizon doesn't actively block each IMEI number -- that would take way too long. They simply have to have a devices IMEI number in their database on an "approved" list to work.

It's not just people like us who care about a phone being easily activated on any network when the bands allow, though we are more aware of the implications up front. If 'Joe' bought a phone from Sprint, then decided he wanted to go to Verizon only to be told by Verizon 'whoa there, JC, not so fast', he would care. Especially if he ended up buying a new N6 from Verizon to be able to activate service with them and took a substantial monetary loss selling his used N6. Of course, he would care a lot more if he found out that he could in fact have used that device if he, or more importantly, the Verizon rep - had been in the know.

Those of us in this forum are far less likely to be blindsided by such carrier interference unless we choose to accept it in exchange for a better price/faster availability/upgrade program/etc.

Whether Google cares or not is irrelevant - they can't be held responsible for restrictions imposed by carriers against the freedom and flexibility of Google's initial design.

Re: Play Store will sell on Wednesdays, Verizon an afterthought?

Verizon probably made themselves an afterthought.

Re: Play Store will sell on Wednesdays, Verizon an afterthought?

I like how Google says they're going to make it easier for everyone, then says Wednesday, with no time frame. Are people supposed to wait around hitting F5 all day?

Well technically that is easier than all week

re: Google Nexus 6 Preorder Info & Reviews

Totally random question, has anyone used apobox.com. I'm stationed overseas and looking at options to get the phone sent to me.
Thanks

Re: Play Store will sell on Wednesdays, Verizon an afterthought?

If I happen to get it on the play store than great. If not, I'll be at a T-Mobile store come the 12th. O well.

Re: Play Store will sell on Wednesdays, Verizon an afterthought?

If the Nexus 6 has all of the cellular bands in it, then couldn't I just buy it from AT&T, Sprint, etc and pop in a Verizon SIM card? It wouldn't make sense to release the different carrier version otherwise.

Edit: Never mind, I realized that you would have to buy it without out a contract then. Whoops.

Purchase through Motorola?

Does anyone know if/when the 6 will be available through Motorola?

Re: Play Store will sell on Wednesdays, Verizon an afterthought?

I'm so glad they finally said something about carrier availability. It may not be a concrete launch day, but at least I know I can get it from AT&T this month.

And the Nexus fiasco continues....

"We are getting more Nexus 6 devices in stock as soon as possible. To make things simpler for you, we will work to make more devices available each Wednesday and encourage you to visit the site then."

Apple can launch iPhone worldwide, online and in store, have it available on every carrier, and it works without a hitch. So does every other manufacturer.

Google is a multi billion dollar
corporation. The way they are going about this is absolutely pathetic. They and Motorola know exactly what their manufacturing capability is, how many units have been ordered by carriers, how much projected demand is etc. This is all basic tuff other companies have figured out, and Google can't for the 4th year in a row.

Google needs to accept pre-orders, give out accurate shipping times, and adjust their inventory and manufacturing accordingly. Stop playing games and stop making your loyal customers play the refresh lottery every week. This is an absolute joke.
