Google Nexus 6P USB-C Charging

Re: USB-C Charging

Question: I read about Benson Leung's reviews and warnings regarding the out-of-spec USB Type C cables and adapters.

The ones that he's been recommending are too expensive/out of order. It appears that these out-of-spec cables can't handle the higher voltage?

Does anyone know/think that it'll be okay to buy these cheap out-of-spec adapters to use for charging with my old, lower powered chargers?

The exact issue depends on the cables but, as I understand it, in some cases the cables can cause the older USB side to be damaged from the higher voltages supported by the USB-C side. I'm not sure how likely it is to happen but I do think it is a decent reason to only use the chargers that do meet specs. To use your car, as an example, do you really want to use a cable that may damage your car's USB ports and possibly the electrical system of the car; especially when you are only saving a few dollars?

that's true, that's exactly why I don't want to be using the cheap cables on my car. but i'm wondering if i can use cheaper cables to charge with my computer and my old, lower powered chargers (1.8amps, 1amp, and 700mah)

Re: USB-C Charging

I just got my 6 foot Cablematters A to C cable. Tested it with an Aukey 2.4A charger and it registers as charging rapid.

Re: USB-C Charging

Says it works on 3Amps but I don't think it'll work with Quick Charge since its needs a different plug?

Ordering for my car anyways.

The cable itself might very well be able to handle 3A but a QC 2.0 USB-A car charger tops out at 2.4A if in QC mode, which you won't be, so I'd guess you'll get 1.5A to 2A depending on things.

At any rate it's the same thing I'm doing. This way my phone charges quick enough and my wife can still QC her Moto X.

Good info. I don't need the fastest charge in the car. I may never need the charger at all but I want to have an option just in case. I never needed one with my Droid Turbo but that battery was huge. I don't use my phone at work other than breaks and lunch so my battery is generally only down to 85% at worst and that's from 5AM to 530PM.

Again, thanks for the link.

A to C cable back in stock at Google! Just grabbed a few before they disappear again.

For $12 you can get a 150cm A-to-C cable from OnePlus.
OnePlus Type-C Cable

You can get one from Monoprice for about $11 delivered
USB 2.0 USB-C Male to USB-A Male Cable, 3ft

Unfortunately, neither are in stock right now. The OnePlus cables pop up pretty quickly. I ordered one. Then they were out for about a week. Then they were in stock. I ordered two more. Now they're out of stock again. It may take some effort to catch them in stock, but the OnePlus cables are very nice.

Re: USB-C Charging

The OnePlus cables don't conform properly to specifications and 'could' cause issues in some certain circumstances.

The 3.0ft Monoprice cable checks out. That's the route I was going to go but the Google cables became available first (Google and Monoprice cables are rumored to be one and the same).

Re: USB-C Charging

The car charger from tronsmart isn't certified, that's disappointing.

I received the Belkin 6ft USB 2.0 C to A cable I ordered off Amazon yesterday. It's ridiculously expensive at $19.99, but it's compliant according to the Google engineer.

Re: USB-C Charging

I have a USB C to C cable from Google and Apple, and several A to C cables (iOrange-E, 6ft; Pecham, 3ft) all of which are working great. Also, in the car, I use a low profile, dual port 4.8 charger. It doesn't provide true USB C fast-charging, but it does charge plenty fast using an A to C cable.

Re: USB-C Charging

any retractable usb a to c cables? or coiled/short (1ft) cables? cars both have usb ports I can plug into, looking for something short or retractable

i don't know if those are certified... may try to draw too much power from the source

Re: USB-C Charging

Not sure if this was asked earlier in the thread... but is fast charging (using the included charger & cable) or slow charging (using a USB A-C cable and an older 1.5A or 2.0A power supply) better for the battery in the long run?

As a general rule, I don't think it makes a difference. The big issue is heat, and fast charging is designed to keep the heat generated by charging within the specs. I do have questions about fast charging in a car, as frequently people are using navigation, or other apps, on the phone while charging -- and I can see heat becoming an issue then. Additionally, even if charging only in the car, during the day, often the phone is in direct sunlight, which also heats the phone.

Re: USB-C Charging

I think you are correct with the assumption about the battery longevity. The battery was built to handle quick charge, so it should not be negatively effected by the fast power. In regards to the heat, the amount of heat generated by the sun, running apps, and quick charging is still not enough heat to actually damage a device, I'm almost positive.
