The question was, how to get the *home screen* to rotate to landscape. This lock option in the notification try does not have any effect on the rotation of the home screen if your completely stock.

EJP gave you the answer...Ultimate Rotation Control app from the Play Store...works perfectly for me too.

Yep, I know... :) A third party app or launcher is required on a stock device. I was just correcting what josh2903 had said about being able to have the home screen rotate on a stock device using the rotate lock switch from the notification area.

Aha...got it.

I'm in the US, and language was set to English US by default, and the toggle is turned on for saying "Google" to activate search... but it doesn't.

If you swipe up from the bottom bezel, you'll enter Google Now. From here, you can say "Google" and it'll make a sound (turning itself on), and then you just speak your request.

Not a trick, and maybe mentioned previously? But worth saying:
One of my favorite apps on my N7 is super video. If a friend sends you a YouTube link you can open it in a window that stays above other apps. So you can text, email, use tapatalk 2 all while watching a movie or YouTube video.

Best of all super video is free .

Thanks to all that posted tips and tricks. This thread has been a big help and is much appreciated.

Another thing I found.

If you start the clock app it will bring up a big digital clock on the screen.

But if you tap it once it will dim the screen wasting less battery, but still visable in a dark room. Tap again and it lights back up.

But wait, there's more.

  • If you tap the clock, it dims to a lower power mode.
  • If you tap and hold on the digital clock, it changes to to ICS/JB blue (no background, floating display).
  • Tap to dim to lower power mode. Now tap and HOLD. It dims further to a very dark blue "night mode." (My favorite.)
  • I haven't quite mastered this, but there are some instances where the clock launches in "night mode." Double-tapping the icon? Perhaps launching and immediately tapping again.
  • The home and recent apps buttons are still active (minimized to dots). If you click something from the home screen or recent apps in dim or night mode, then tap the clock icon again, it returns to the previous state (dim or night mode).

Oh.... Others discovered some of this. Cheers.

It also stays on when the screen locks (if you are plugged into the charger). ;)

Go into settings-about tablet-android version.......tap android version four or five times and then long press the big jelly bean.
Actually I think it's three times. Fourth time sprouts the antennae and smiley face.

In the floating display, only one (?) of the jelly beans has the smiley face.

You can tap and fling the jelly beans off the screen. I tried flinging them all off the screen at once, hoping to find a "you won!" screen, but when I think I achieved that, all I got was a tired finger.

Addendum:

If you wait long enough, a candy cane floats into view. No idea if other candies appear as well....

silly question
how to enlarge the screen with a stylus pen?
tapping twice over the screen enlarge it only slightly. I want to enlarge it as if I'am using both fingers.

If you use Nova Launcher (which is basically just JB but with more options), just go into your main Nexus 7 Settings under Accessibility and tick the Auto-rotate screen box and your home screen will rotate.

Or if you want to stay stock just get Set Orientation for free.

No need to spend $4.

New tip for anyone trying to trick there Nexus into thinking its in another country using DNS change.

For instance I use this to watch Netflix USA content in Canada.

When you are connected to a Wifi connection go to the list of connections.

tap and hold onto the network you are connected to. It will bring up a menu to "modify network"

This allows you to change more then just the IP address, but also the DNS so you can make these changes. Works great for me. I can switch between Canadian and American content fine. Like usual Netflix just thinks you are travelling.

I've been using the Canada service for the past month and I have been really impressed with their selection of movies, so far watched Captain America, Super 8, X-Men First Class, Gulivers Travels Also Rise of the Planet of the Apes has just been added. And I use blockless.com, They offer 7 days FREE trial and only 4.95$ a month if you like it ..

Fed up of system apps that you can't uninstall? Well you can disable them:
