Google Now - am I missing something?

Right now I have 4 cards for nearby concerts I didn't know about and also a comedy performance and a WWE smack down. Maybe not earth shatteringly important but I never look in the paper so it's nice to know about.

I get cards for area restaurants and pubs, and Google Now asks me if I'd like to watch favorite TV shows and movies (or just ones I've done searches on for some reason).

This morning Google Now tossed up a simple multi card tutorial to encourage me to set an alarm, make an appointment, and use voice dialing and texting, and other stuff.

The more I'd go places and do things the more Google Now could improve its helpfulness. Right now it's just trying to anticipate what I'd want based on my searches.

This is it in a nut shell....the more you do the more interaction there is.

Oofa since you find it un-necessary then turn the cards off. However; When I am out of town and want reccomendations to eat or where to stay I find that places is pretty accurate about the choices people reccomend. You have control to turn the cards off that are irrelevant rather than to have therm keep popping up.lol The best thing about America is the choice is yours to do as you like. You are certainly entitled to your thoughts, but with the cards on AND THINGS WORKING I CAN GET THROUGH A DAY .

That's why my first words were, "for me". Of course my cards are off.

Many may have that run-of-the-mill taste in movies, food, events, concerts and........ did I read that correctly......walkathons????? (You need to know where a walkathon is taking place? :D Too funny!)...... and I'm sure if you like what everyone else likes, Google Now will help you "GET THROUGH THE DAY". I seem to not like what "everyone else is doing and liking". The interesting parts of my life are the parts where I discover food, movies, music and events by communicating with people, not Google Now. If it's different for you, that's great. This is all just an opinion about what I think of Google Now.

So are you disappointed that the phone is a phone and not some person at Starbucks (or an after hours club) turning you on to a cool obscure band? Because... Your phone is a phone.:)

Google Now has been periodically updated since last year with how it behaves and what cards are available. As someone mentioned earlier, it goes beyond the settings that are available in the Google Now app. One important feature that Google provides in conjuction with Google Now is Web History. If you have Web History enabled, Google will remember anything you search for and what websites you have visited from your searches. Recently, I started seeing more cards appearing based on my Web History, including web site updates, what's currently on TV as well as episodes that are airing in the evening for TV shows that I like. I've seen other cards letting me know if a new album is out from an artist that I've searched for or that I have in my Google Play Music library.

The abilities of Google Now extend beyond the settings in the app. Cards will appear that are available within the system itself and are based on your activity and other Google services that you use.

Google now can be very accurate for someone with an always on the go lifestyle as myself. Knowing how long your commute is about to be before you leave is cool. It telling you you need to leave now to be to work on time? Thats cool.

It keeping track of your itinerary for hotel check ins so you can hit that card and pull up the itinerary to check in to the said hotel is cool. It tells you when your flight is leaving, if its delayed. Your sports time at a glance, all of them. If you're looking for instance if the jailbreak for iOS 6 was available like I was about a year ago when I had my iPad, it updated me when there was news of the jailbreak that was available based on an old story I had read.

Tells you cool things to do in your area at any given time, stock info is cool etc. Bad *** if you ask me..

I think this guy is sad that it's not a real person, someone he can converse with. Find super obscure things to do like find band, knot in the chain link fence. /S

For me it tells me what time my hair dresser is arriving back from Dubai (he sent me his tickets to print for him) and the result of all the Cubs base ball games (I have no idea who the Cubs are, let alone supporting them but I am a Scout leader so have Googled 'Cubs' on several occasions )

It's good... but not brilliant.

Lol if you don't follow baseball I suggest you go into settings and change your sports teams if you do follow any

I've tried clicking the 'I'm not interested' button but to no avail. Google is determined I should be supporting the Cubs... and in fact I do feel a slight high when the win or low when the loose.

Could be an interesting ruse, rename your sports team to 'XXX Hot Babes' and what your fan base grow in Google Now!

You are too smart, and too funny...I don't need to know where "marathons" take place, but in the events cards they pulled one up for a good cause. Whether I am a fan of something has "NOTHING" to do with the fact that they exisit, and I used it as an example of the depth of the "GN" cards. For "Me" it is not about liking what someone else likes again that is just another foolish analogy. Not eveyone likes what anyone likes, However; to get a reccomendations about places to eat and stay Google Now has been a very good point of reference from "MY" past experiences when you are out of town with no one familiar around.Ialso don't live "my" life out of a phone.LMAO

Not everyone will be accurate but in "MOST" case more good than bad, or vice versa in the review department can help. While in DC Bus Boy and Poets was recommended as a friendly place to get a bite to eat....I went there and it was everything those reviews said it was for me..... a quaint place to eat a "QWIK" meal. I asked someone where I could find a bite to eat on the street and they also suggested Busboy and Poet. I look at the places map near me for restaurant suggestions, and the ratings were pretty close to what I would give to those restaurabts that I have eaten in. Let me also just say that I have exquisite taste in food and "Don't" eat what many will. I have paid overa few hundred dollars to eat KOBE steak, but don't eat "sushi".lol Let me also finish by saying I have never been a follower because someone else is doing something.ROFL Since you appear to be a bit bruised let me apologize if you feel that I was trying to insult you, because that was not my intent.

I also receive cards for events happening around my location, like concerts/food and cultural festivals.
I receive cards when my favorite artists' release a new album, or my favorite actors/actresses are in upcoming movies (including my obscure foreign films and actors).
I receive cards for interesting restaurants around my location. I receive the basic weather/traffic/sports/stocks if I want.

Precisely the point that I was making about what Google Now can offer to anyone that appreciates randomly finding that information.

Not sure if this was already answered for you, but you get billions of things added to your "Everything Else" section of Google now by performing Google searches. Not sure if they need to be done on your phone, but that's how mine were done. For example, just as an experiment, search Google now for your favorite actor or actress, favorite movie or TV Show, anything like that. In the search results, it will most likely have a card with a little overflow three-dot button in the top-right corner. Tap that button and Google will most likely ask you if you're interested in receiving updates about this person or TV show, etc. Hope this helps.

Could you give me an example of one of these cards with the overflow button please. I have tried a dozen or so films, actors,TV shows in Google Now, and can't see what you are describing.

Are you signed in to google and/or chrome when you do your searches?

If this is in reference to me, yes, naturally I am, and for everyone else, I'm sure you need to be signed in to fully utilize Google Now. It has pulled up things from my past search History such as movies (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence - as seen in my screenshots above), which I searched quite awhile back before Google Now was even a thing, in order to find out if the movie was any good, because I had seen it available for me to watch on Netflix. Google uses your search history to determine suggestions for you; you then see the card and get to dismiss it (by swiping it away), leaving the possibility of that certain subject coming up in your cards again later on, or tell Google specifically that you are not interested in it by using the three-dot overflow menu on that specific card.

At least, this is how I'm seeing it thus far with my own personal use.

I'm sorry, either I was wrong or Google already changed the interface? Probably just me though. Instead of the three-dot overflow menu when you search a person or TV show or whatever, the card asks you at the bottom. See new screenshots below. Sorry about that!

Here's a couple of examples of things that I have really liked:

I was taking a trip to California by car, and picking someone up at the LAX airport, then driving to another part of LA to stay at a hotel. When booking the hotel I got a confirmation via Gmail. I also had my friend's flight info forwarded to my gmail account. The day of the trip Google Now gave me directions to the LAX from Phoenix (including horrible LA traffic conditions), it gave me the weather for LA that day, it kept me constantly updated on the status of my friend's flight. It gave me directions from LAX to the hotel. All of this was based on receiving two emails. I didn't have to do a thing.

Now, I don't use this type of thing on a daily basis, but its always there - and you don't really have to do anything.

On a more regular basis I like having the weather, my work commute time, and my sports teams scores always at the ready. I also like having my appointment reminders (and location aware reminders). If you input an address when creating the appointment, it will remind you when you need to leave to get there on time.

Another thing I have used is - doing a google search for a restaurant while at home. Google Now automatically gives me driving time and directions.

For most of us, we probably don't use Google Now every day. But when we do, its really fantastic and easy.
