I started using Google Pay with this device. Does the phone have to be unlocked PRIOR to putting it near the NFC deely? Or does the NFC deely trigger an unlock request?

It's good enough to make it preferred when available. Much faster/easier than CC chip reader payment. However, not anywhere close to universal access, so you'll need to carry cards.

Unlock phone then use NFC payment.
I agree 100%. My only issue that some credit cards will not give me points and perks when using Google Pay.
do you need to open the app also?
Definitely requires secure unlock verification. Otherwise anyone with access to your phone (if stolen, lost etc.) would have use of your credit card via GP.
Any idea why? and do you know if the Amazon Visa card is one of them?
I use Amazon Visa Rewards and it works like a charm.
thanks but do you still get your points? someone said some cards don't give you the perks
How do I know if store card reader is NFC?Except for running into the rare fickle NFC reader you'll find it super easy and fast to use. You'll be done with phone back in pocket well before you'd even have a CC out of wallet into a chip reader slot.

I just started using Google Pay. Not sure if I will stick with it. Google has so much info on me I'm not sure I want to give them more (putting on foil hat). Tapping the phone is not much faster than tapping my credit card.

In the UK the limit that you can pay with Google Pay per transaction is £30, maybe around $40?
