Google photos taking up massive amounts of storage space

The past few days Google Photos on my S7 Edge keeps growing to over 14 GB of space filling my phone. I have to clear data and start again until it does it again. I can't delete and reinstall as it is a system app on my phone. Anyone else experience the same thing?
