The front shooter is pretty capable too.

Here are some side by side comparisons of the V30 and Pixel, both shot in full auto with auto HDR. You can scroll left to right to see both photos of the same compositions - V30 on left, Pixel 2 XL on right.

You can see the Pixel consistently outperforms the V30 in full auto. But I am surprised by how close it is, as one can easily get he V30s shots processed to be even closer by processing raw (a slight uptick in contrast and mid tones would do wonders) instead of letting LG/auto do the processing. Case in point: Check the very last link where I post processed the V30s photo manually and see how it compares to the Pixel (more favorably than when left in full auto)

As is, when photos are viewed on the phone, the V30 holds its own quite well going against the class leader, considering it has a whole another dimension to its photography with its wide angle lens which isn't covered here.

V30's photo is post processed manually and MUCH nicer and compares well with Pixel:

maybe its my browser but i just see blank pages :(

I think it was some weird descriptor tags in the embed code. These links should all work, let me know if they don't. Sorry for the back and forth on this, frustrating.

Me too.

But, if I go to Knightlab's home site, the samples there work just fine. So, I don't think it is a browser problem...

I am pretty sure that in the not to distant past some of these links have worked. I do recall seeing some of the images - not sure who posted them, or when.
One nice thing about computers/internet, just when you think you got'm all figured out, you wait a minute and realize you don't.

(I'm getting an awful lot of "hey, that wasn't supposed to happen" notices here.)

Ok forget the juxtapose. Here are the LG v30 and pixel 2 xl photos uploaded by themselves. V30 images are usually the first of the two and have a small watermark on bottom right. All shot in full auto.

If I sit there and pixel peep, detail level seems very comparable between the two. Google's HDR processing is miles ahead (obviously), particularly when the sky is in the shot. Google renders the blue of the sky so beautifully.

Google's post processing is also a touch high on contrast particularly in the mid tones. Google does allow for a LOT of noise in the photos, particularly evident in indoor shots in artificial light. LG and Samsung both seem to do a better job with noise - Samsung in particular has significantly toned down its aggressive noise filtering and does an awesome job with the Note 8. Actually, everything samsung does in the Note 8 is their best work - so much better than images that come out of the S8 with the same sensor.

I have comparison shots of the LG shot with native camera app and the ported Google camera app, and the way skys are rendered is a stark difference.

Here are more comparisons. Here's the twist though. First photo of every set is pixel 2 xl, second is v30, but with the ported Google camera app.

Damn close! The pixel still preserves shadow detail better but with the ported app the v30 photos are nearly indistinguishable.

Where I spend hours every day. It's remarkable what HDR+ does with dynamic range. An ordinary photo would either totally overexpose and blow out the window or would expose the window correctly and the room would be underexposed and way too dark. I can actually read the Schubert Impromptu on the music rack!

I wish there was a locked mode so I didn't have to enable it every time.

I wish it wasn't buried behind the menu button. It's annoying to have to press that and then select the portrait mode before taking a pic. I wish Google would fix that in an update.

I agree. It is such an awesome feature, it should be available via a single touch and not require diving into a menu to find it and enable it.
