'Google Play Service has stopped' when initially verifying account Moto G4

Trying to get my old G4 up and running. I did a factory reset (holding Power and Volume Up down for 20 seconds) and after I put in my email and password I get 'Google Play Service has stopped' while it is verifying login. It then goes back to the beginning (asking for email and password again) and the same happens. I've tried different Google accounts and tried hardware reset again. Always same result.

I think it is probably Nougat as android has probably been updated but the base version was Nougat.

Power and Vol Up isn't enough for a full factory reset -- that will probably just force a power off. Did you do a factory reset from the system settings, or from the Recovery Menu? https://www.motorola-support.com/uk.../moto-g4-g4-plus/topic/reset/external-reset/1

If factory reset doesn't work try flashing the stock firmware
