Google puts timeframe on nailing Hangout's coffin.

I think some of the reasons are Google not focusing on one app. Throwing everything against the wall and seeing what sticks isn't always the best way to go.

This is a bummer for me. My wife and I like to use Hangouts to communicate with my 9 year old daughter (and I prefer her not to set up an account with other messaging platforms at this age).

They moved the Hangouts team to Messages a few months ago.

Hmm, let's hope they add Hangouts-like functionality to Messages that doesn't require a phone number.

I'm disappointed. I use Hangouts through Fi for cross-device texting. I am also logged in to Messages on my Mac with it and communicate with my family that way. To move off that platform may be a challenge. Also - I wonder what accommodations they'll make for transitioning history, and for the cross-device texting for Fi..

Not too surprised at the shoddy reporting. Journalism used to mean that a piece like this would have been researched, examined, answered several questions (think: who, what, where, when and why), and possibly given an opinion in the final thoughts.

These days, it's who can get the story on <insert random event here> faster than the others... truth, and integrity be damned.

Can't agree more! It's beyond horrible these days. No one actually investigates, verifies THEN actually write a report. Sensationalism and sizzle is all we're getting these days. Speed and clicks .. that all that matters.

Damn shame.
