Google Shamu: Motorola Nexus 6 (Nexus X)

With those specs, anyone has any idea how much this phone will cost? Regardless, I have my money ready..... let's go!!!

value pricing has always been one of the hallmarks of the Nexus program. my guess is that price will remain the same as the Nexus 5. history tells us this too. Nexus is meant to showcase the platform - not a mass-market retail device.

Value pricing didn't really kick in until the Nexus 4... I think the original Nexus one was $500+ unlocked and straight from Google.... Considering that was almost 5 years ago that price wasn't all that cheap.... If I recall correctly the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus were way higher priced... The Nexus 4 was the first real fight on price...... (Thus spoiling us a little)

$499 - 549 seems like a reasonable price range though if specs hold true....

I agree with $500. Hope I am wrong but would be some google magic if they stay at $350 & $400.

I see so many small petite woman with Galaxy Note 3 devices than I actually see large burly men with them (or it probably just stands out way more)... I remember the first time was around Halloween last year with my kids out doing the trick or treat thing.... The number of SMALL woman out with their kids taking pictures with their Note 3 devices was amusing at first... and over time it's become some what of a normal thing I see... At least here in Texas (Where of course everything is SUPPOSE to be bigger anyway)

LOL Nice way to sign that off but yeah, maybe it's a geographical thing. I have yet to see a female w/ a phone larger than a Galaxy S4.

Probably a logical fallacy on my part based on my own observations from... well, everywhere I go. I just don't see many women use them.

Very common around here..... the first few times I thought it was just a rare sighting but I see it all the time..... I know of 1 woman at work and two soccer moms who also have them.... At the same time several women I work with think my Nexus 5 is WAY TOO BIG..... (iPhone users)

I very much look forward to Shamu actually coming out 5.9 and being a Nexus device....

I wouldn't complain about $500... if Google somehow pulls it off in the $399 - 449 range (or lower) They'd actually hit that point to where they are truly losing money on the hardware with an eye to gaining it back on the back end with more devices out there... The only reason I DOUBT it... is they have partners in Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola and the such that they can't just crush on price.... Unless they argue they are not going to advertise and the Nexus stays more of a "Geek/Nerd" novelty aimed at tech geeks and nerds.....

1. Galaxy Nexus was value priced at $399.
2. Value pricing for the Nexus program can be justified today far more than it ever could 1-3+ years ago. This is because of the increase in Android revenue, profits, economies of scale, and growth potential of the platform. Google can afford to subsidize the Nexus program today far easier than it could 1-3+ years ago. Google makes so much money selling razor blades today it can give away a few reference design razors in order to keep the ball rolling and the money flowing in.

First, I wanted to comment that the 5.9" size is a big draw for me. One advantage we women have is that many of us will carry it in our purses, so no worries about fitting it in a pocket or putting it in a case on our belts, etc.

I also wanted to ask a question, since I don't have the background most of you have with Android phones. Where will the Nexus phones be sold? Only through Google or in other stores like Best Buy? Are they typically also available for sale through carriers? If bought through a carrier, do they add their own bloatware to the Nexus, or is the Nexus the same as what you would get if you ordered from Google? Personally, I would like to be able to see and hold the phone before buying it, but in this case I might be tempted to order sight unseen.

Probably launch on the Google play store as an unlocked device on any GSM Carrier (T-Mobile and AT&T in the US) then it just depends on who will agree to carry it......... T-Mobile and Sprint sell the current Nexus 5 but charge more than if you bought it directly from Google.... but Sprint offered it at a discount if you signed a 2 year contract....

Oh there is no doubt Google sells these devices at little to no profit and look to make it up on the back end with ad revenue.... I think on their last quarterly report Google reported roughly $60 BILLION in cash on hand with little debt to speak of..... So they can afford to make a mistake or two... They could probably also very easily afford to just give away a million devices without blinking an eye or losing any sleep over it...

Android is and has been their attempt to stay on top of the search and online ad game.. They know we are moving more towards mobile so they are investing heavily into android and mobile.... They could easily sell the Nexus 6/X/Shamu at $399 if they so pleased... I don't think they will just because of Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG and the rest of their "Android" partners... If Samsung started pushing Tizen harder Google could always push back with Android....

Google has been offering value priced Nexus phones for years. why should they stop now? it's not a mass-market heavily-marketed to consumer phone. most people have never even heard of a Nexus phone and i don't see that changing anytime soon. even when i tell my friends about the value of Nexus + No Contract Prepaid - most still buy the Galaxies, iPhones, on contract and subsidized. Nexus value pricing has been/is no threat to Google's hardware partners. Google wants a lot of healthy hardware partners and would love them all to be as profitable as the free market allows. however if someone like Peter Chou at HTC drops the ball and mismanages his company and gets beat by Samsung that's his own fault. Android OS is the winning OS but it does not guarantee you success - especially if you fail to manage and execute well. Google's hardware partners are each their own greatest threats - not Google/Nexus.

I kind of wished Google had kept Motorola and made them their Nexus Hardware provider going forward........ People were afraid that Google would lean more towards Motorola for the Nexus program but LG isn't making any real money on the Nexus 4 or 5..... as you've said it's not a mass marketed high volume device or market... and they are sold pretty close to if not at the cost of the hardware to make, package and distribute.......

But Motorola ended up just being a patent grab......

Google doesn't want to be in the low margin hardware business. they'll spec out the Nexus devices because it's a necessary evil but they don't really want to be in the business or be a direct competitor to their hardware partners. there's so much more profit in services and services are a lot more "sticky" and harder to become commoditized.

the 6" display is nice but i don't think it will affect pricing because of where the technology/production levels are at today. phone displays are following the familiar pattern of all maturing commoditized technologies. example -

Love the render minus the size. If they could do that in a 5.2-5.3" I'd be in Heaven.

Yes, I know there is a Moto X. I'm considering it if this ends up being 5.9" only.

The Nexus 5 as sold on Google Play will also work for Sprint. It's not strictly for GSM networks.

If Moto makes a 5.2 nexus it will essentially be the new Moto x without the features and customization. I really want to buy the new X, but I'm not solely due to the subpar camera and battery. I couldn't imagine the nexus being better in this category. Hell the 5.9" is supposed to house the same camera.

I know.. I originally used my Nexus 5 from the play store with Sprint and then took it to T-Mobile.... Typically unlocked devices from the play store work with any GSM carrier..... Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) usually restrict the phones on their network.... Very rare for them to even allow unlocked devices.... I was actually shocked Sprint allowed the unlocked Nexus 5 on their network (Although buying the 32 gig from the play store and getting activated on Sprint was a challenge at first)

Unless Sprint or Verizon come out and say they will allow the unlocked version from the play store it will be limited to a GSM carrier.....

if the Moto X had a bigger battery and wireless charging I would have considered it.

I think the Nexus Shamu device will have OIS in the Camera while the Moto X does not... Not sure how BIG of a difference that is.... Hopefully they can improve the software A LOT!!!!!

It was even more complicated if you wanted to activate a Nexus 5 on Ting (a Sprint MVNO):

Ting Help Center -- Nexus 5 for Ting trailblazers... (website link here)

Excerpt:

"It's been asked a few times, so to be absolutely clear: only Nexus 5 smartphones from the Google Play store are eligible. Nexus 5 smartphones from Sprint, Best Buy, and Amazon cannot be brought over as part of the Nexus 5 BYOD program. This likely will not change until late 2014 at the earliest."
