Android Central Question

Samsung Galaxy S9 running Android 9.

Latest Gboard installed.
"Use Voice Typing" is turned on.
Languages is set to English (US).
Google Voice Typing > Offline Speech Recognition has English (US) installed.
Auto Update Anytime is selected.

With Data and WiFi off, when I tap the microphone on the keyboard, Speech To Text starts and then turns off immediately. When I have Data and/or WiFi turned on, it works fine.

Any Suggestions on how to get Google Voice Typing to work offline?

It seems everything is fine...Open Google voice assistant.. it will prompt you if you have missed something...

Welcome to Android Central. It sounds like you've crossed your T's and dotted your I's on this one, but honestly I don't know that I've ever gotten Offline to work. Like you've said if there's not connection things just don't work... I haven't thought about it much in some time. I found this guide that might help you, honestly I didn't go through it, but Quora is a source I've heard of... https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...ndroid-phone&usg=AOvVaw3OzIGGkhbxr7Hws70KnXK5

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, it just says to enable Google Voice Typing and download a language, which I've already done.

Must have something to do with either the S9 or Android 9, because speech-to-text worked fine on my S7.

How to get a hold of Android/Google, about this issue?

Not sure how they can have an entry in my phone that says "Offline Speech Recognition" and there is no way to use it offline.

Hi Guys,

Just an update on my issue and resolution. Yesterday I tried having Google Voice Tying and Samsung Voice Input both enabled in Settings > General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards. But it did not help the issue at all.

Today I put my S9 and S7 side by side, went to the screen mentioned above and just disabled Samsung Voice Input on the S9, so only Gboard and Google Voice Typing were enabled. With WiFi and Data both disabled, I went to messaging and put both phones into Speech-To-Text mode and both worked Perfectly! offline.

WTF! I know I have only had Gboard and Google Voice Typing enabled in the past and it didn't work offline. I've tried all possible combos in the past. (Gboard/GVoice, Gboard/SVoice, SBoard/Gvoice, Sboard/SVoice) and none worked offline.

Personally I think the S7 told the S9 to quit F'in around or this guy's going to toss you in the trash.

But seriously, one thing I did, in between it working/not working, that may have contributed to the resolution is I went into Settings > General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards > Google Voice Typing > Offline speech recognition and uninstalled and then reinstalled the English (US) language.

I'm just happy it's working offline now and hope this thread may help someone else someday. :D

PEACE

Thanks for updating us. Glad you sorted it out. Love your s7 telling your s9 to 'pull it together'! :D

CORRECTION:

-sorry for the previous misinformation...

The only way I could get Speech-To-Text to work OFFLINE on my Samsung Galaxy S9 is to make these changes:

1) Settings > General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards. Disable all except Google voice typing. (FYI... you can't turn off Samsung Keyboard, since it is grayed out, but that is OK.)

2) Settings > General management > Language and input > Default Keyboard. Make sure Samsung Keyboard is selected.

3) If Speech-To-Text still does not work OFFLINE, you can try going to Settings > General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards > Google Voice Typing > Offline speech recognition. Uninstalled and then reinstalled the English (US) language.
