Google Voice

I think what's really needed is the ability to set a default, and then for each phone number in a contact give the ability to force GV on or off. In an effort to best utilize minutes to everyone's benefit, I want to use GV when calling non-VZW numbers, and NOT use it when calling VZW numbers. There are also some exceptions that would apply, like numbers with an extended dialing sequence (i.e. calling voicemail, pausing, then entering a password).

Well there's a couple options.. like do I click add a new # or use this number?? And do I do say use GV for no calls and just use the toggle shortcut? Is that what most do?

I got an invite today. had to wait for 3 weeks +/-. So the options are:

You can either use Google Voice with your existing mobile phone number and get:

* Voicemail like email, with automatic transcriptions sent via email and SMS
* Low cost international calls to the entire world
* Custom voicemail greetings based on who is calling

OR choose a new Google phone number to get these additional features:

* One phone number that rings all your phones
* The ability to send and receive SMS messages via email
* Spam filter to block unwanted callers

At this time it is not possible to switch between account types, so make your choice wisely!

Curious to know what people are using and also the definition of Low cost international calls. Is that cheaper than a purchasing on-line calling cards?

Just a friendly reminder, please do not ask for invites in this thread or your post will be deleted. If you need an invite please see this thread.

i choose the number that is the number for my cell phone when it asks.

and i pick use GV for no calls as i primarily use it for VVM and international calling.

what you choose depends on to what degree you want to replace your normal number with GV

alright thanks. I havent set it up for VM yet, is that easy? and do you have any tips to set that up of is it pretty self explanatory?

Automatic Startup

Can anyone clarify... does GV start automatically when the phone turns on? So even if you select the option to not use GV for any calls, if you go to settings and look at the currently running services, is GV always there on startup?

Thanks for any info.

pretty sure it does. just boot your phone and have a friend text your google voice number. you should get the alert if its running. I used a new google number and I set mine up so it does not forward the voice texts to my phone (if you do forward, then you get hit with the double text and it counts againt your verizon text monthly limit). So with voice i get free texting. I also set it up so it asks me every time i make a call whether or not to use voice. Sometimes It's annoying to go through that, but it's really only one extra click and I like the flexibility depending on who I am calling.

Calling/listing wrong number

So here's an odd problem I'm having ...

I'm getting calls from GV just fine. But when I place a call, the Moto Droid is
  1. Showing the wrong contact name and photo, but still calling the correct number.
  2. Initially calling a number that is NOT my GV number. Then says the call can't be completed.

Anybody ...?

I've never seen the contact name/photo thing. But im not sure i've paid much attention to it either. I've gotten calls that could not complete before, but I attributed it to the connection. That said, when the calls could not complete, calling without gv worked.

I have been toying with the idea of dropping the texting plan on my Droid and opting to use my GV number for all my texting needs. I have been testing it this week and have had great results. I have been monitoring my VZW account and my number of texts hasn't moved since Sunday so this strategy seems feasible. Has anyone tried this?

My only grudge is that the lowest refresh setting seems to be five minutes on your inbox. This is odd though because some texts seem to push straight through, while others either wait to post in five minutes or require me to refresh the inbox. Any thoughts?

P.s. I love the product, and transcribed VM's has been fun to play with.

i think its well suited for this. was my original plan as well. only problem I had was some of my friends and family keep forgetting to text my new number, and text the verizon one. My other issue was many of my friends/family are on verizon, so they want to call me on that number. It's too confusing to tell them "if you text use number A, but if you call use number B"

But overall, i love voice

you can use the app called text plus to get rid of your texting plan..I'm going to set up gv now and only use it for the vvm feature..we will see how it does...I hate nothing more than listening to voicemail...

I have played with text plus but I don't like the ad's and the way it shows on the recipients phone. It looks cluttered and messy.

How well does GV integrate with the Droid? I'm getting the droid in the next few days and am debating if I want to port my number over, or just start over only giving out my GV number (This should save me on at least text messages, and minutes if I get friends and fam).

Does it work well enough to use GV as your primary number?
