Google WiFi assistant

[AC Question]

According to the Android Police, this assistant feature is now also available on non secure WiFi, manually accessed. Is this correct? I live in Norway and use Nexus 5x on Android 7. Can't seem to utilise this feature though it had been installed etc.

I can attest that it works. My Nexus 6P has offered the Google VPN on several occasions.

Thanks for clarification. Have to keep looking, seems not to work on any of the open WiFi I have tried.

Well, I have tried a few other open WiFi but no 'Google Assistant'. I would very much appreciate guidance from you as to the settings that I should check as 'On' or 'Off'. My Nexus 5x includes this feature and has Google Play Services version 9.6.83.

I've done no special setup. I am on Project Fi, which has had this capability for a year or more. One requirement is that the network not only not be secured with a password but also not a "captive portal" network that requires accepting an agreement to connect. At least, this is how it was with Fi, and it automatically connected and secured those networks, even if I hadn't connected to it before.

My most recent experience was 10 days ago. I had the wireless network at Citi Field saved as I had been there previously. My phone connected when I was in range (in the parking lot) and I was prompted with a notification in the notification shade to secure the connection.

Thanks for reply. I will keep 'looking around' open WiFi's to see if any are accepted by Google Asst. From what I read about this facility (in the link below) I got the impression that just about any free WiFi you connect to will be accepted by Google Asst?
