Gorilla Glass just a bunch of hype?

I put a textured case on mainly because I like the textured feel, the extra grip, and even a touch more thickness.
Plus the case I am using has a built in stand, which is VERY hand..

I actually use something similar sometimes that is really thin and snaps on/off.. I can never go full armor. Definitely can't use a screen protector because I don't like the feeling while swiping.. I have bought them before for my Blackberry's but every touch screen I've had since had Gorilla glass, so didn't need.

What's wrong with screen protectors? If you put in on right, it's feels like there's nothing there at all. (Insert image of Flander's reference).

Perhaps part of the problem is I don't apply them right, because I can't seem to ever get one without a least a spec or two of dust underneath...and that bugs me to no end. Add to that I feel the screen just isn't as sensitive...I prefer not to use one.

I really never got why people baby their phones and buy huge cases that double the thickness/weight of the phone.. I've treated every phone that you see in my sig the same exact way... It usually goes in my pocket along with whatever other crap happens to be already in there. I've never broke or damaged a phone ever.. I've even fell asleep with it in a pocket.. I find that the more you think about protecting stuff the more likely you will damage it..

For me it isn't so much just protection, as it is fitting my hand. I really don't like a thin phone. It doesn't feel comfortable and the typical slick surfaces feel like they will, and HAVE, slipped out of my hand easily. I put a textured case on mainly because I like the textured feel, the extra grip, and even a touch more thickness.
Plus the case I am using has a built in stand, which is VERY handy.

Occasionally if I carry it in my pocket (I normally use a belt holder), I remove the case for the thinness. A thin phone gives you the option of going thin or adding a case for more grip. More options are good.

On the screen protectors, I always use one. In fact, just last month I was at a hotel on the coast. I put the plastic room key/card in the pocket with my S3. A few minutes later when I pulled out the S3, there was a hole being ground through the plastic by some sand that was on that card. It may not have damaged the original glass, but don't want to do that test to find out.

Some of my phones have had cases...some have not. I'm not naive about the amount of protection they actually provide, but in some instances I do like it better in the case. With my S3, I found it slipping out my hands a lot, so I got a case for it. Sometimes, especially when I'm planning on carrying the phone in the pocket of a sport coat or something like that, I take the case off...but for normal everyday use I prefer the case on my S3. I have the SEIDO Active case, and I actually prefer the added bulk and thickness it provides; plus I can it face down and not worry about scratching the glass (which helps this post relate to the OP).

This topic has been beaten to death by people who don't know how to take care of their expensive hand-held electronics. I'm on my third gorilla glass phone spanning 4 years and have never had a scratch. If you take care of your phone, it won't get scratched. End of discussion. Close this thread and close all others that try to rehash this exhausted topic.

I'm not going to get into an argument but maybe those of us who "choose " to protect them know exactly how to care for them by protecting them. I guess it's a matter of perspective and taste.

And I'm sure you don't have auto insurance either.

I carry my phone in my pocket at work with no change, keys, etc and it's scratched up. Bought an ArmorShield to hopefully protect what's left of the screen. Pretty disappointed in the screen tbh.

Sure YOU might take exceptional care of your phone, but the other 99% of the population will keep their phone in their pocket with change, keys, and whatnot, and will be sorely disappointing when they find little nicks on the screen.

I didn't mean to rehash an old topic, but with every new phone that's released behind gorilla-glass hype, I'm sure many users wonder if the situation's fixed. That being said...I'm def getting a screen protector.

I haven't used screen protectors with any of my smartphones and not about to start now. Never had any issues with scratches.
I'm not advising one way or the other...I think you have to make the choice for yourself. Some people will need them and some won't...it's that simple.

I'm on the fence. I had the OB defender on for a while, and the sg maxx. Both screen protectors annoyed me to no end. They killed the joy of the screen.

I now am using a tpu case no screen protector for about a week and love it. I noticed a tiny micro scratch that you can only see if you go under a direct light and tilt the phone just so, otherwise any normal non-ocd person would never notice.

I only keep it in pants pocket and I'm a school teacher, so no construction zones for work. I may get one to use for a couple months because I plan on keeping the phone for about 18 mo until I'm eligible for an upgrade. So I'm thinking screen protector for 6 months, then take it off and roll the dice. Or, I have insurance and may go no protection and if the screen gets bad, take a hammer to it and get a replacement.

Any recommendations/advice? Anyone know a protector that works with a tpu case?
:)

That's a lousy analogy.

1. Auto insurance is mandatory.

2. Cars cost many thousands of dollars.

3. It's highly unlikely that a stranger is going to smash up your phone under any circumstance.

Gorilla Glass isn't impervious. Things like sand (which is actually glass) will do serious damage. That said, if you carry your phone in a dedicated pocket you should never have any scratches. As others have stated there is a volume of real-world evidence from many users, including myself, that Gorilla Glass will show no evidence of any scratches or damage when handled properly.

Overall, the screen protector and phone case industry is a scam in this day and age. Personal preference and certain behaviors will still lend themselves towards ownership. Most people, though, should be able to properly maintain a $200 smartphone without them.
