I am from India and recently it started to happen to my Android JB Phone. This was after the phone manufacturer offered a software update(which I obediently installed) and it started to eat away my battery. It's only yesterday that I did bump into one process of JB called Tertiary Locator, I guess, is being used by Google themselves for location based advertising? How I fixed it? Well, installed GSAM Battery app from play store, check all the processes & apps and their battery consumption, locate and tap on the process 'Tertiary Locator', tap on Manage, go disable it. No more GPS thing going live when I am making voice calls or using data connection.

My new replacement phone just this morning started acting up again with the GPS after 2 weeks and 2 days. I knew it was to good to be true. But thanks to idlewire's post I was able to banish the GPS forever! I was about to give up on this awesome phone but, your posting came at the perfect time

I'm glad I could help! It's weird but after a couple of weeks in which I rebooted a few times and had to kill the service because it was turning on the GPS, now when I reboot the GPS doesn't turn on even though the service is running. Very odd.

This is definitely a nice phone, undervalued compared to its competitors, and I'm glad this little annoyance wasn't a dealbreaker!

yeh this happens on alot of android phones sounds crazy test this out talk about a product in front of your android phone and then go watch youtube on your computer not your phone see if you get a related ad... google spys

I should add that even though I'm rooted now, I wasn't when I came across the solution above. So NO need for root to fix the annoying auto GPS BS

Since its been a while, is it still working? I noticed when I start to do this it says that some features may not work right. What features? In case the phone is lost or stolen, will it still be able to be tracked? New to android, so sorry for questions.

Thanks for working out the temporary fix for the issue: ie, stopping the service that is likely from Carrier IQ. For me its called IQ agent service, found (as for others), under running apps, and as mentioned, it has to be done everytime you reboot/restart the phone.

Some of the you have discussed rooting the phone. This is usually a great idea, even apart from the Carrier IQ issues. 2 points to note specific to this phone are: (a) while rooting is easy, unlocking the bootloader requires some effort. (b) having got past that, the (probably) best-matured ROM for this phone is Cyanogenmod, but I found that all versions of it from 10.2 to 11 have a problem of increased battery drain, even if no apps are installed besides Gapps. This is much more disconcerting than the gps issue for the stock rom (which has now been addressed, kind of). The stock rom meanwhile, has exceptional battery life, provided you don't clutter your phone with a lot of radio-hungry apps.

A good approach (that I didn't try) could be to root, but stay with the stock rom, and try something like App Quarantine to freeze the spyware.

Been this way for almost six months and no gps symbol during calls since day one. Checked last week by turning off and GPS symbol came back immediately during phone call. Followed above procedure and no gps symbol during phone call. Problem solved and no noticeable battery drain. I get 3% battery loss on standby over an 6-8hr period with data/wifi on and auto sync to everything turned off.

Also, does any body else G pro increase about 5% on standby after the first hour or so and then drain? (Info obtained from vanilla batt statistics)

I read every post here and finally found my solution...
Thanks to cchungcc and idlewire, I stopped the "Carrier IQ" service under Android System, and the problem's solved.
I usually won't turn my phone off, even if I did, its not a big deal to just go there and disable it again.
I also tried other edvice, which is "Access to my locations-on / GPS satellites-unchecked / Wi-Fi and mobile network location-checked".
Yes it does help keeping GPS off during phone call or other wifi service, but it is still similar to having GPS on since its just using different signals. It will keep searching for wifi access point and use up battary.

My situation:
I had my phone for more than half year, I found this issue after I installed an app "Fake GPS Location Spoofer Free", but I don't think this is the real cause because uninstalling it and factory restore aren't helping.

this is the solution. turn off your "3G" from your mobile network setting and the gps wont turn on again during phone call or wifi networking. hope it helps

3G service is allowing us to run the GPS automatically. so turning off the 3g is the best solution .

It works, do you know why? it is so annoying being changing from 2G to 3G every time i wanna use internet. Is there any final solution to these problem?
