Great day for the Evo 4G and Sprint

Customer: Hi AT&T, I just wanted to find out your rate plans because I am excited about the new iPhone
AT&T: Sure, no problem. Go ahead and turn around, pull your pants down and bend over, alright, ready? Here we gooooooooooooooooo!

My wife used only 140MB on her iPhone last month and she doesn't even have the wifi on at home, which probably cuts 100MB off of her usage so this probably won't affect her.

this plan change pisses me off, as i am waiting on my ipad 3g, 25 dollars for 2 gb, im pretty sure i can eat through 2 gb pretty quickly, will an ipad burn through data faster than a phone? absolutely im so glad ive never gone with at&t this is ridiculous

Cr12: Only if you use more data on your iPad than your phone.

In some ways, its good for customers that don't ever use that much. In other ways, especially for ANYONE who was looking forward to iPhone tethering, it's a joke. You have to pay $20/m for the privilege of tethering, and you're still tied into the same 2GB cap (note, you SHARE that cap with your phone!).

It can add up fast if you're doing things like streaming shows through the ABC app or even downloading the iPad version of Wired magazine which is 500MB!

It's a good deal for most current Iphone users, but full Skype over 3G is coming, video ichat is coming, video streaming of movies via Netflix, official tethering, etc... People will start using way more than 2 gb of data and will be forced to use Wi-fi, ie, it eases Apple's network without them having to expand it. Now if the cap was 5 gb and not unlimited, this would be a bit more reasonable but will still suck for the upcoming data sucking video calls/streaming of movies/etc...

Oh and this effectively kills off the Ipad with 3G built into it. You can stream a few Netflix hi-def videos and be done that month. And it hurts people who want to tether their Ipad to their Iphone - same problem. Official tethering on the iphone = dead on arrival.

im thinking that this plan wont hold much water, i think they are going to get a huge backlash for this, mainly from ipad 3g users.

makes me mad, glad my phone is still with sprint so when i blow through my cap i can still tether with an android phone.

You hit the nail on the head. The thing is for current users it isnt so bad because ATT has blocked tethering all together (i still have it because i havent updated past 3.0). It is really going to piss new users off though. Video Chat...goodbye(at least 2 GB a month), tethering....nice try (2 GB is about 1 movie). right now i have used 120mb of data ITS BEEN 2 DAYS on my billing cycle. I cant wait to make the switch to sprint on friday.

For the people that download apps, movies, and music OTA to the iphone will be paying up big time. And those on family plans with more then one smart phone on the plan will pay up. A $20 fee to tether 1 device to you phone vs $30 for up to 8 devices and still unlimited data. At&t will lose out on this one. I think that the trend of switching over to At&t for the iphone will stop. Even Verizon is looking at changing the fees for data on the phone. As long as Sprint keeps things unlimited it might see a boost in customers. People are already switching just for the Evo and that was before all this came out. SPRINT FTW.

You got 14 GB which would be $145.00 for just data on At&t's new plan.

I'm pretty sure a gigabyte is 1 billion(1,000,000,000) bytes. So the poster in question didn't even come close to 1 gigabyte. I'm pretty sure when you are in the millions those are megabytes and thousands are kilobytes.

He said "14,673,849 kilobytes," so that is 14 GB.

Well yes he did. I wonder if he meant that. Does your bill show kilobytes or bytes used? I don't use much data so on 3 lines last month I show a little over 440,000 used. I wonder what that 440,000 measures.

I see it this way....once Sprint catches up to the amount of Data used by customers as AT&T gets, they will soon follow

I am more worried about Sprint applying these kinds of charges to us. If their network gets congested they may have to deal with the same issues as AT&T.

I'm not sure what the bill says, but if you log-in to Sprint.com and analyze your usage history, it shows it in KB.

If most of the usage goes over 4g it won't be a problem. 3g is a straw and 4g is a sewer line (appropriate for a lot of Internet traffic ).

Also, Sprint is still fighting for survival. They can't afford to lose customers over price. The EVO is a big thing, but it is Android's rapid evolution that is the true game changer. And, because EVO is an Android device, we can easily jump Sprint for another carrier. There are going to be a lot of great Android devices on all carriers, so pricing, coverage, and data limits will be the biggest factors in choosing a carrier. This is Apple's Achilles Heel. They have a locked down OS and carrier exclusivity. Android, not a specific phone, is the game changer or iPhone killer (or wounder). During the coming year, we'll see new Android phones with dual-core processors, better battery management, and a variety of form factors. Additionally, with Android beginning to outsell iPhones, programmers will be shifting priority and focus to Android programing. Lotsa choices means coverage and pricing will be the new paradigm. Sorry Big Brother (Apple), but you are about to lose your grip on the non-fanboys (the vast majority of us).

Sprint/Clear 4G is on massive spectrum compared to 3G. The challenge will be providing enough backhaul to 4G sites.

I'd bet Sprint does eventually go to some type of caps for 4G but it will be comparable to cable industry caps, not 3G caps.

What most people dont realize is this is not going to affect current customers. ATT stated today that if you are currently on the unlimited data plan $30 you will not have to change your plan to upgrade to the new iphone. It is only going to screw over NEW customers that join ATT.

Isn't the iPhone 4/HD supposed to be announced like next week? This news from AT&T makes the possibility for a Verizon iPhone a whole lot more credible.

Yes, though if existing customers want to add "official" tethering, they will have to switch to the new tiered pricing.
