GS5: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

The issue with M8 camera is not only the 4MP resolution but also its weak dynamic range and weird pink/violet color cast in bright areas. So even if all you do is uploading to FB, twitter, it often doesn't look very nice. It's takes shots pretty fast and that seems to be its only pro from what I see.

That's pretty spot on. It also overexposes daylight like crazy.

Both are great devices too me; however, I went with the S5, it felt really good in my hands compared to the M8, which felt like I had to hold tighter. I also don't care about build material, as long it's built well and comfortable.

GadgetGuruHD took a 4K video under water, then dropped the S5 from 2 stories. It was 100% functional, finger scanner included, with only a cracked screen. I don't care what anyone says; that's impressive and the design has everything to do with it.

How do the S5 and M8 compare regarding cell reception? There have been reports of poor signal strength on the S5 while other devices like the S4/5S have great signal in the same location.

If Samsung could really figure out TouchWiz, the galaxy series could be so much better. Until then, I'm straying away.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

It really doesnt matter if they "figure out touchwiz" or not...Just put Nova on it and youre good. The fast processors can handle anything you throw at them. These dang things are faster then my first 2 desktop computers. Regardless, Nova cant fix the camera. So the M8 will always fall behind the S5. As far as the verge review....they are not a reputable source for info on any phone besides the iPhone.

Man. This thread has made me LOL.

Pick what works for you. Be happy with it. If you're happy with it, don't let what others say change your mind. If you're not happy with it, take it back and get something else.

FWIW I've seen reviews on multiple sites for both phones, and they've all had both good and bad things to say about both.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Was this not a debate thread on which phone is better and why? Guess I read the title wrong.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I have both in my possession right now and I am trying to decide which one to keep. Here is my personal scorecard:

1) Physical build-I like both phones. The GS5 fits in the hand nicely and I like the fact it is not overly tall, like the M8. The GS5 rattles when it vibrates. I can also feel a vibration in the phone when I am talking on it. A little disconcerting to say the least. The M8, on the other hand, is rock solid. No rattles, no vibrations. Just a block of phone. Crafted out of one piece is how it feels. On the downside, HTC refuses to put the power button on the side of the phone. So you are reminded of just how bad a design that is every time you have to shut off the phone. The GS5 uses a proper placement for the power button. In terms of on screen vs capacitive buttons. I find myself hitting the home button frequently instead of the space button when typing. In theory I like the on screen buttons, but in practice I think I like the capacitive.
2) Software-I really do like Sense better than touch wiz, BUT, I do like the new touch wiz much better than versions past. There are wierd things that Samsung does though that really annoy me. Like why does blocking mode put a permanent symbol in my notification space at the top of the screen? Even when not actually in use? Why does the keyboard not return to the alphabet after I add a question mark at the end of a sentence? Why does it warn me that most functions will be disabled if I dare to use a pebble smart watch? On the other hand, Sense is excellent. Everything works exactly as it should.
3) Camera-both cameras are very good. I used the M8 all last week and go some really nice shots. All the talk about it being "crap" just sounds ignorant after you have actually used it. The GS5 camera is very good as well, I would say slightly better. Taking a picture in low light can be frustrating as the camera tells you to "hold steady while the picture is being processed". I dont even know what that means but it pretty much ruins any shot as my 2 year old refuses to hold his pose while the camera does its thing.
4) Speed-Both phones are plenty fast. No complaints at all.
5) Battery life-This was interesting, and is the most important trait in a phone for me. The M8 started out fantastic. Unbelievable really. Since the first 5 days though it has taken a turn for the worse. The GS5 started out horrible. Then settled down is now better the than M8 was when I first started using it.
6) Accessories-I bought the S view flip cover and I have to say that I really enjoy it. I have tried to find the Dot view case for the M8 but apparently HTC only made 3 of them.

Today I have to make my decision and I think im going to go with the GS5. While I do think the M8 is a better made device, the battery life is a deal breaker for me.

the end.

You can supplement the 16GB with 128GB SD card. You can't magically make the camera have a higher resolution.

You can do the same with an M8 and still end up with more storage. Plus have you seen the price of 128gb cards? Point is 16GB phones came out in 2009. Apps are much bigger now. The camera pics in the GS5 take up much more space than before. 1080p vids take up more space than before. The OS take up more space than before. Get the point? How is that less impractical than not being able to make posters for your bedroom wall unless you are a preteen. Like I said, It's about compromises for all these devices to stay at a $650 to $700 price point.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

What was really puzzling was that the Verge reviewer mentioned that he spilled a beverage, got caught in the rain, and dropped the phone in the urinal (twice). Yet the IP67 rating was passed off as no big deal.

There's another review that loved the real time HDR and then said the camera was about the same as the S4.

I get a sense that some reviewers are actively trying to dislike the phone. At least it wasn't called "slimy" this time around.

David Peirce is a tool bag, he rates everything like crap that isn't an I phone. He gave the droidmaxx a 3/10 I remember. If anyone sets the curve for paid off or completely biased reviewers, it's him.

The Verge are a bunch of hipster techies and they mostly care about cameras and phone design and apps. They aren't paid off because they say bad things about all the operating systems. They despised iOS 7, still say WP has no apps, says BlackBerry is dying, and that Android consistency problem. As far as I can tell all those complaints are valid.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

About the position button complaint when turning off the screen, there are apps that can turn off the screen. I use screen off fx, but there are others in the Google play Store. I set it as one of my pie control apps so I can turn the screen off even when I am in an app. I also programmed the back button into pie control as well

If you think the only drawback of the M8 camera is not being able to print out posters, you either haven't used it or don't know what you're talking about. The lengths people go to to defend that camera is pretty hilarious.

Again; if it works for you, great. Just don't try and pass it off as comparable to a flagship in 2014. Or 2013, for that matter.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

The reason htc doesn't do as well as Samsung even though the m7 was clearly better than the s4 is because the galaxy line has this cult following of people no matter how (edited by Moderator) the device may be.

Or because HTC creates phones that check off all the spots that make reviewers giddy. Samsung focuses on the consumer and doesn't cave to pressure from morons with a keyboard who write reviews that bash the use of plastic.

Guess who's more successful in their approach?

Yea, that whole arguement is stupid. Load up a photo uploaded to G+ from an S5 and an m8, and you can see the difference night and day. Its plain and simple, you want a sharper camera? S5. everything else kinda of boils down to personal preference.

id like to say the uptight HTC cult is just as strong on forums and blog posts than the samsung fans. In fact, lately id like to say theres more "OMG MY M8 IS WAY BETTER" posts on S5 blogs and reviews than there are actual samsung fans. It's comical.

I'm glad M8 owners love their phone. They have a lot of reasons to. I just can't see how you can look at both phones, devoid of personal preference, and not see how the S5 is better overall.
