GS5: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

What is knoxx?

- - - Updated - - -

You can get to developer options on verizon's verison.

Knoxx is a security lockdown of the bootloader so you can't root and flash a custom rom.

Developer editions are different versions of a phone that comes straight from the factory with an unlocked bootloader. It's made for developers so they can create custom roms, kernels, etc and test them out on their devices. All android phones have developer options, but not developer versions

The Verge review only proves my point. They gave the design a 6/10 when it's easy to grip, allows for a removable battery, and is water/dust resistant. It's not metal so it's not good.

The 16MP camera got a 7/10. That's hilarious.

The software, which has improved by quite a bit, got a 6/10. No kudos on the flatter design, smoother performance, and less in-your-face software features.

It's not going to change any time soon. No matter what Samsung does, there won't be a lot of respect from the tech community. Good thing Samsung doesn't listen to their stupidity.

The consumers do not really listen to the reviewers either, which leads to even more digs at the S5 in some reviews.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Given your past here @ AC you know that is a false statement and RARELY is anyone banned for one particular post outside of spammers & discrimination/harassment. I have owned branded Samsung's, Nexus, Blackberry, HTC & iPhone and each has their pros and cons and I have no particular " favorite ". So branding me with that is false. Tomorrow I may own a Moto, LG or Sony and all that will matter is what works for me not anyone else. I'm a volunteer here at Android Central and that said I'm not paid or pushed to support, drive or be bias towards anyhing in particular. I love the platform in general and like to see the success of all OEMs that use it.Exactly, you have made sure your assessment out weighs anyone else and as you said " you could care less " who you step over in the process.Give everyone the same respect you feel you deserve when your on the soapbox and quit looking over your shoulder worried about if your posts are going to get yourself in trouble. If everyone participates appropriately then there is no need to be on the defensive concerning the tone or actions over their comments ;)

If you wish to continue this conversation I'll be happy to take it to PM because I'm sure here are others in this thread that wish not to watch this sideshow.

So if I'm not breaking any rules, why are you even bother commenting? That's why I said I don't care if anyone says something as opinion or fact. They just better be ready to accurately defend said statements.

There's zero wrong with preferring one over the other, but I tend to speak up when someone bashes a device with false information. It'd be the same way if someone told me the M8 lags. It doesn't. If people feel I'm doing the same thing, by all means, call me out on it.

Man. This thread has made me LOL.

Pick what works for you. Be happy with it. If you're happy with it, don't let what others say change your mind. If you're not happy with it, take it back and get something else.

FWIW I've seen reviews on multiple sites for both phones, and they've all had both good and bad things to say about both.

You are lol'ing because last year at this time you were helping to moderate the serious flame wars on the S4 forum. Man that was ugly. Much more civil this year!

What ever happened to Jennifer? Have not been on AC as much since getting a Lumia in my collection.

I haven't used the S5, but I can say that the reception on the M8 is better than the S4 and G2 in my experience. Signal is extremely poor in my office and the M8 is the first phone I've had that doesn't constantly drop to 1x or no signal.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I don't own the M8 or I am even defending the camera per se. All I am saying is that there is no way I would by a 2014 flagship own with only 16GB for the reasons I've already stated.

I have yet to run our of room on my current 16 gig device. So there's no hypocrisy at all in my not seeing that as a negative. Images, backups, etc. go on the external card where they won't be lost if my device craps out.

Actually, only one.
M8 is better => No KNOX bootloader.

If you root, Knox is easy enough to disable. If you don't root, it doesn't matter at all.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

That's you, because for me, I've never needed more than a 16GB ROM smartphone, with 86 downloaded apps, Sygic Navigation with 3 States Maps and My Movies PRO with all my 250+ movies database, and the rest of OEM stuff, I still have over 8.5GB available, why do I need to think that 16GB is a thing of the past? If they offer a 32GB for the same price than a 16GB then I'd get it, but while I still have the choice to save some money, no matter how little, it's good for me.

My Pictures, My Music, My Videos and all the different stuff that I want available when I switch phones are in my 32GB SD card, and even in that I still have about 17GB available.

So, again, in your case if 16GB is not enough, then go get a 32GB phone, good for you, the same goes for me, 4 Ultra (Suma, Supra or whatever they fancy to call it) pixels is not enough, simply because I use my phone as my only camera, and I do want to be able to use a great photo and crop it, edit it and create my 8x10's from it...So I get the phone that gets me what I want, and that's the S5.

You do realize you are making excuses for Samsung the same way M8 owners make excuses for the camera right? Yes. If you have an unlimited data plan and can pull everything from a cloud service. Ok. But you still made my point. You went out and had to buy/transfer a 32GB sd card to supplement internal storage. Plus that card can't run apps since Kit Kat.

No, you are the one that still looking for excuses, I'm clear of what I want and do, as I stated clearly, I use my SD card because I can switch phone whenever I want and pick with me my Photos, videos, and music, the rest are in the Phone storage and it is sufficient enough, I even still have more than half of the phone storage. It has been like that since my first android and don't see any changes in the near future, primary reason why I don't even consider phones without SD Card.

Again, I get the phone that I want when I want, I'm not a X company hater, whatever phone I like I get it, right now, using a couple of them, just swap the Sim card and keep going, so sorry, keep looking for other person to insist on try to convince, with me you will be wasting your time.

Unfortunately not all devices have a developer version on Verizon.

Motorola and Samsung usually have you covered.

Moto X Developer Edition for Verizon: Moto X Developer Edition for Verizon - A Google Company
Galaxy S4 Developer Edition for Verizon: Samsung Galaxy S 4 | Verizon Android Smartphone | Samsung Mobile
Galaxy Note 3 Developer Edition for Verizon: Samsung Galaxy Note? 3 | Verizon Android Smartphone | Samsung Mobile
Galaxy S5 Developer Edition for Verizon (Coming Soon!): Samsung Galaxy S? 5 (Verizon), Charcoal Black

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

There is no need for a developer edition on Motorola anymore. They don't care if you unlock the bootloader. To get support it must have their factory software. Samsung is a pain and sometimes the devices go on backorder for months or they are not available at launch. They also take their time with radio updates if they give them at all. Anyway, I'm done with Samsung over the KNOX stuff with the S4.I was never given a choice, it just installed with an OTA.

It didn't install on its own. You authorized the install. How about you say that you were 'unaware' of Knox when it came OTA with 4.3 for your S4 because I was 'aware' and did not install it on my S3. I rooted my device just to get rid of the OTA nag and have my Knox free S3 currently.

I did say "installed with an OTA".
And just to be clear KNOX appeared in MI1,which was a bug fix for ME7 and was not 4.3.
It was a "bug fix" OTA that introduced KNOX on the Verizon S4.
There was no documentation indicating KNOX when the OTA came out.
MJ7 was the first 4.3 release on the S4.
KNOX was implemented long before 4.3 on the S4 which is why people we "expecting" it in 4.3 releases on other Galaxy phones.
Please don't preach to me. I don't want to get into a long debate over KNOX.
I just won't buy another Samsung device and suggest that others that don't want the crap KNOX on their phones do the same.

Nothing here to see, move on............

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I went with S5, used it for about a week, didn't really feel like an upgrade over S4, camera gave up at night with good artificial light ing, phone didn't even feel like Android anymore. Returned it, M8 screen is much better, indoor and outdoor. That BoomSound. Pretty happy with it. Camera takes good pictures day n night, resolution is not as good as S5 but quality is amazing.

You need to realize that your priorities are not his priorities.

Its like your talking to a guy about his car. This guy doesn't race cars. Doesn't care about racing cars. Doesn't ever want to race cars. Could care a less about racing cars. Your talking to this guy and telling him his car sucks because he cant race it. Get it??
