GS5: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

The phone hasn't even been out for a week.

I'm pretty sure there were some people who preordered it and received it before the actual release day, at least according to these forums

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

So are we all going to just describe our experiences on why we chose one over the other? I can do that.

I got some hands on time with the M8 at Verizon a few weeks back. I then got to play with one outside of the store because a friend of mine couldn't wait for the S5 and mistakenly bought it (it's since been returned). What I find most amusing about the M8 is that not only do the majority of "tech experts" tout this as a worthy change from the M7, but HTC does, too. The same company that blasted Samsung immediately after the S5 announcement.

The screen is more or less the same. Very little difference between it and the M7. The camera is the same way. It's better than the M7, but not by much. Losing OIS hurt a lot of areas it used to be passable on. Aside from some decent software tweaks and better battery life, there's really not a whole lot of difference between the M7 and the M8. In fact, I prefer the M7 build to the M8. It's smaller, has more of a grip, and it utilizes the bezels with capacitive buttons.

Since the thread is S5 vs M8, there's a winner between the 2. The screen is better. The camera is better. The phone is more durable and versatile. It has better battery life, if only marginally. And it will undoubtedly blow the other phone out of the water in sales and popularity. Everyone has their preferences. Mine is the Nexus 5. Between the S5 and the M8? S5. "Period. Full stop."

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

My biggest gripes with M8 are its tall height and super slippery back surface with more weight. I'm sure it will drop more often than S5 and then it won't look very nice any more. If you put it in case, it loses the whole merit on the build quality, appearance. If M8 didn't have that issue, it would be real hard toss up for me between two.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I have both devices and enjoy them both. Comparing the two, the m8 is marginally smoother in operation and I prefer sense over TouchWiz though ultimately I prefer stock android. I have had a number of freezes and lockups with the s5 and none of that with the m8 so it seems a little more stable.
Design wise...the m8 is too long to me and feels almost like carrying the note 3 again. The s5 feels more manageable in hand. Battery life is a draw so far. Screen is s5 easily and whatever polarization was done to the screen on the m8 renders the device unusable with certain types of polarized glasses.
The big difference for me is the camera with the s5 producing way better detail in the photos. I just don't think I can justify going backwards in camera ability from iPhone 5s. Both solid choices, but I wish htc had included a better camera.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Galaxy S users remind me of Apple sheep. I was happy when people started switching from iOS to Android, but now all the previous iPhone users are just using Galaxy products. I wish they would just try to look at other options, but it's easy for them to blindly follow based on how Samsung and carriers advertise. They think that a slight tweak in internals and 16 vs 13 MP camera is so much better. Samsung is made out of plastic and I know lower numerical specs are far superior than Galaxy S5. Even the M8 takes better pictures, in some circumstances, than the S5, yet it is ONE FOURTH of the MP. People just think higher numbers means better. It bothers me....

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I wish I could be cool and stylish and not a sheep.

The advertising has convinced me to get the S5. It's arriving tomorrow.

Baa baa.

Great first post!

Its not as if the S5 has flagship worthy specs or anything else to justify purchasing it. Just a bunch of sheep blindly following the commericals make up all the sales.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I am still trying to decide between the two. Please help me with this -
1. Better sound on M8 vs better camera on S5
2. Removable battery on S5
3. Metal vs plastic is moot for me - with a cover
4. Size is almost a wash - slightly taller vs slightly broader
5. PdaNet+ (with WiFi and the works) - which one runs it well? I heard that HTC blocks the WiFi feature on PdaNet+, and that Samsung allows it. Is that true? Has anyone tried it on the M8 or S5?

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

It's all personal preference as to what features and style you want. Sense 6 is better than TouchWiz IMHO. I would go with HTC build quality. The design of the M8 is absolutely beautiful. Depth of field feature on M8 is pretty awesome, but most of the time S5 will take better images. However it does tend to saturate colors too much. I like to stand out so I would go with M8, but like I said, It's all personal preference.

When I look up PdaNet+ on the Play Store, it says it is incompatible with all of my devices - which includes a Sprint M8 and an AT&T Note 3. I couldn't speak for the S5. I think WiFi tethering is more a function of the carrier rather than the phone itself. You may have to root to get it without paying for it.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

The home buttons on the M8 frustrated me. I noticed they were on the bezel last year, so why on earth put them on the screen and take of .25 of an inch or what ever it is. I really like that S5 utilized the whole screen. M8 was cool and all but the tallness of it really pushed me away so I went back and got the S5. I am coming from 5S btw and glad to be back on Android.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Personally I would like to think HTC users are becoming sheep to. It seems like the HTC One is the only "Great" build quality around in their eyes, and any other phone is garbage if it doesn't have that same level of quality. They turn a blind eye to the oversized build, large bezels, and how slippery the phone is, and go about acting like it's the only superior experience around.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Also, one of them turns you into a sheep.

People making all of these stupid sheep references all the time are more annoying than the people they're complaining about. Enough with the stupid name calling, people can get whatever phone they want even if it's not the one you have. Okay?

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

It's ironic that everything comes full circle. Remember all the Android users making fun of iPhone users, calling them sheep and how they will buy anything Apple throws in front of them. Complaining about how Apple doesn't innovate and the iPhone is the same year after year. Now that this is happening to Android, Android users are calling other Android users names! It's ridiculous, tiring and old. Time to grow up. No one phone stands out as being dominantly better than the other.

And most importantly: the phone someone chooses has no reflection on the personally.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I don't think the lack of innovation is why Samsung is hated among Android users. I assumed it was because #1 they're really popular and they sell like crazy, and a lot of Iphone users have switched to Galaxy. #2 Because of their locked down experience which a lot of Android users don't like even though they can go buy all the other phones that aren't locked down....

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I know this is childish but I want to get some things clear here.....

Sheep = Uninformed individuals who blindly follow anyone/anything.
Fanboy = Ferocious proponents of a company/device.

......Nobody on this tech site (AC) or any others would be sheep because they are, well, informed....lol!

So you think that all the HTC has going for it is it's build quality? I'll flat out tell you I own both phones and prefer the M8 to the S5, but that's the beauty of Android right, having options!

I'm usually a Samsung guy and this time around the M8 has been a breath of fresh air. Aside from the stellar build quality. Sense 6 is SUPER FAST. I mean it has not force closed on me in the 9 days I've had the phone. It's very clean compared to the newest touch wiz, again this is my opinion. In using them in the last few days I've noticed the M8 is a lot snappier than the S5 browsing, multitasking etc. Again everyone uses their phone different. I am a power user and on my last charge I got just about 7 hours of screen time on the M8.

Both GREAT phones I think the S5 will take slightly better photos if that's what you are looking for. But I don't use the camera much or take 50 selfies a day. Than again.... The M8 does have a 5mp front facing camera lmao.

I love em both. I'll give my gf the S5 and switch back and forth when I get bored. She is the picture taker anyway :) Makes sense to give her the phone with the better camera.

That said coming from a NOTE and S series devices. This phone has been a treat to handle. Every time I pick it up its just music to my hands. The phone does get FAR less slick after getting your natural hand oil and finger prints on the phone from handling it. Which the phone does a good job hiding , at least the gun metal version. I only wiped down the back twice so far in 9 days.

That's just my 2 cents. Calling people sheep is ridiculous lol. I could write also why I love the S5. It's nice to have options for different tastes.
