GS5: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Galaxy S users remind me of Apple sheep. I was happy when people started switching from iOS to Android, but now all the previous iPhone users are just using Galaxy products. I wish they would just try to look at other options, but it's easy for them to blindly follow based on how Samsung and carriers advertise. They think that a slight tweak in internals and 16 vs 13 MP camera is so much better. Samsung is made out of plastic and I know lower numerical specs are far superior than Galaxy S5. Even the M8 takes better pictures, in some circumstances, than the S5, yet it is ONE FOURTH of the MP. People just think higher numbers means better. It bothers me....

As with any product some may go on things that may not be the whole fact (such as the MP argument)... And people only class them as "sheep" since it's the most popular Android phone... But regardless.. Both are good phones. There really is nothing wrong with either.

As always.. It boils to preference. I like them both but.. Will I get one? Maybe.. But Doubtful. I had an M7 but then tried the Note 3...so... I'll more than likely wait for the Note 4 and call it a day. Why you ask? Some may call it petty... But they are my needs and they are... Replaceable battery.. Can't go without that anymore since I enjoy it to much.. And screen size. Plain and simple :).

Name-Calling

Definition:

Name-Calling - Use of profane, derogatory or dehumanizing terminology to describe another individual or group.

Labels Designed to Hurt

Name-calling is one of the most common tactics people use to hurt others or disparage them. It often occurs when someone has an emotional argument to make with little or no supporting logical argument.

The emotional mind can often have a “mind of its own” or “emotional intelligence” which operates independently of the logical mind, and name-calling is a product of this emotional mind, an explosion of feeling in the form of barbed words.

Most people who indulge in name-calling know that the label or name they choose to describe another individual is not factually accurate. The label is often regarded as hyperbole or as a metaphor. Something which more accurately describes how the speaker feels about the other person than what the speaker actually thinks about the other person.

People making all of these stupid sheep references all the time are more annoying than the people they're complaining about. Enough with the stupid name calling, people can get whatever phone they want even if it's not the one you have. Okay?

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I deeply value screen real estate (in a device of manageable overall size -- so the Notes were out). So the fact that the M8 simply squandered over 1/4" on the bottom of the screen for those awful on-screen navigation buttons was a complete deal breaker for me. As they say, that was (and is) "game-set-match" at least for me.

Some people do actually like the on screen buttons. I just never liked how the physical buttons lit up. Always seemed tacky to me. Again just personal preference.

I'm just wondering, is this any device with on screen buttons, or is it just the M8 because of that and the overall length?

I despise all phones with on-screen buttons. The utter waste of valuable screen real estate is almost criminal.

I just wish app devs would move quicker with updating for immersive mode.

What apps currently take advantage of the immersive mode? I am a fan of the on screen buttons, just wish immersive mode was used more often. I know Google is trying to move in the direction of manufactures using on screen buttons.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I've been reading loads of reviews and having a look at youtube videos for the past few days as I couldn't really decide whether to upgrade from my Samsung Galaxy S3 to the S5 or the M8. Finally went to the shop today and had a quick go with both the phones and tbh whilst the M8 felt really premium and the materials felt nice, it didn't feel very comfortable to hold. The S5 to me felt more flimsy but more comfortable, and tbh I do like the new back cover and the effect on there.
I didn't really get a chance to play around enough to discover Sense on the M8 but I did use it a bit (more than the S5 as I already had an S3 and the interface was similar). Part of me wanted to get the HTC One M8 just to try something different (my last HTC was the HD2 with windows mobile; great hardware but crap software at the time) but part of me wanted the S5 because I've had the S3 for almost two years and knew it was a good phone, furthermore the fact that you can change the battery and it being water/dust proof were also factors (as well as the superior camera although this wasn't a deal breaker).

In the end, I had to toss a coin (seriously) and the S5 won so I got it. I'm happy with the phone if a little underwhelmed as I don't feel the actual OS is much improved from the S3 although admittedly I've only had it a few hours. I do kind of feel a little regret that I didn't get the M8 but that's not because I'm unhappy with the S5 but more because I feel I want to explore the M8 more. This probably proves that the two are neck and neck!

I seem to come across them randomly. I wish I could remember specifically which ones. Quite a few games do it. YouTube also does it. HTC's Gallery app does.

Ok thanks i will Youtube them. Speaking of youtube, that supports it when you rotate the phone they go away and you can use the full screen. :)

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I had both. .. just got the S5 after returning the M8. Major problem with the M8 is that the metal above and below the screen is glued on. .. had to replace my first one because it was peeling off on the right side of the phone from factory. T mobile got me a replacement and they also got their demo model in and all had the same problem. They let me switch to the s5 without penalties. Both are excellent phones. Just didn't want to deal with that after paying 680 dollars for the phone.

Re: S5 vs. HTC M8

The S5 is the better all around device. If you get giddy over metal designs like the tech sites tell you to, then get the M8. If you appreciate functionality on a superior device, get the S5.

It won't be near superior until it is converted to stock. It seems rather sluggish :/

Re: S5 vs. HTC M8

I had the M7. I decided to roll over my contract of course I considered the m8, the Galaxy s5 and the Sony Z2. The z2 is vapourware where I live, so that was easy.
The m7 camera was annoying me; low light is awesome but the resolution meant no zoom, and that's a loss. Meanwhile, the s5 is ok in low light, and superior in most every other way.

Also, my phones go on to second lives with family members; what with nephews and nieces I'd expect my phones to have two more owners after me. Replaceable batteries give phones a much longer life. Strike 2 for the M8 (but this is a personal consideration).

I had a Galaxy Nexus in days of yore, and I understand the pros and cons of plastic cases, and despite the fetish for metal cases, plastic has its advantages (apart from battery replacement). It's lighter, tougher and more replaceable.
Technically, the s5 gets a lot of things right, although apart from the camera, none of them are knockouts. The screen is better, in perhaps little ways (it scales right down to very low light output in a dark room, something I missed from my previous oled device). The S5 has lower audio latency (keyboard clicks are useful, they aren't on the m7;I don't know about the m8), better stereo output (see Anandtech's review, best ever reviewed and indeed better than the m7, which was very good) and then there's the camera.

Reviewers go after touchwiz. After having the s5 for a week, I can say that I don't mind touchwiz at all, given that I always use the Nova launcher (on the One as well). The S5 keyboard is really good, a keeper (and few reviews give it credit). The quick settings are good, equal to Sense. So far I'm still using the touchwiz calendar app, although normally I use third party apps. I was not looking forward to touchwiz and expected to install a custom rom to get rid of it, but I think it's been given a bum rap by reviewers. I have sense 6 on the m7 (via a custom rom) and it's really nice. It definitely looks better than touchwiz, but not that much better.

The pulse reader works. Jury is still out on the fingerprint scanner. Biometric security is essentially useless ( a password you can't change) but fingers are convenient. The Galaxy's implementation works just well enough for me to persevere, but you have to play by its rules. Reviews said it was useless and I didn't plan to use it at all. It is therefore better than expected.
