GS5: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

Sounds good. But, I am curious as to why you traded your M8?

I had the m8 for a week before i decided to trade it in for a s5.

REasons I didn't like the m8?

Being a college student make me forget about my charger sometimes whe im in a rush and sometimes i forget to charge my phone, i hate when that happens. and the m8 battery actually doesnt last long for me after i played some games and watched movies on it.

with the s5 i got an extra battery and its awesome, i have 1 fully charged battery now so even if i run out of my current one i just pop the back off and switch outt he batteries and BAM

100% battery instantly...

next is the camera , now this didnt batter much to me, but after a while i tried to crop one of my photos. man did it look nasty on my m8. but it was decent, nothing special.

next was the back . not sure how to explaing it but a flat back feels way better than a rounded back like the m8 has. i came from the droid razr maxx and i liked the back how it felt, it feels pretty much better on the s5. the m8's back is so rounded it makes it hard to get a great grip on it if you try one handing it, but with the s5? no problem at all.

3rd and probably the biggest problem i had with m8... the touch bottons at the bottom, man do i HATE HATE HATE them so much, because they rarely go away, and make your 5 inch screen....4.8 inches actually, and not sure if someof you noticed but the bezel at the bottom witht the htc logo on it + the touch buttons give you this BAAD look on your phone, it makes the screen look wierd wen you are watching a video on netflix or youtube in full screen too.

it's a shame i really loved the htc one originals look and feel and i wished the m8 would be a great upgrade for it, but man did they screw up the phone in some ways so badly that it basically made me dislike it, really wished they just made an htc one with the physical touch buttons, sd card and kept the back flat with a 5 inch screen. the stereo speakers are awesome though. but its not worth it just for that,

i thought i would hate the s5 due to all the hate samsung gets from people (the "apple of android") but, wow its good. no lagg at all and more options on how to customize it than the htc one .... i can actually have my wallpapers scrolling unlike the htc one m8.
yeah s5 if you are active teen or something sure it'll be generic and people will say your following the crowd and that you are a sheep for buying an s5 but it doesnt matter because it actually is a good phone and it does what it needs to do .

I never use cases

OK, I didn't say 100 percent of people use cases. But thanks for your reply, just for the sake of arguing. Rock on with your HTC.

The buttons go away when watching a movie on Netflix or Play Movies, and when you're watching YouTube in full screen mode (basically in landscape). I'm not sure how that's a valid complaint at all in those two situations.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I bought the M8 first. Coming from an S3 I wanted to try something different. I was certain I would like the S5 already and wanted to see how the M8 would stand up. Since I knew I could trade the M8 within 14 days I figured I had nothing to lose. The problems I had with the M8:
1. Anytime I tried to text someone for some reason I couldn't hit the space bar right. I would end up with one long word and have to go back and redo it. If I then adjusted my thumb down just a bit I tended to hit the software home button and close the app. Talk about frustrating.
2. It was just too tall for the pocket I have to carry it in.
3. Power button on top. I would keep hitting it when putting the phone int he pocket and then inadvertently end up turning up the volume on the phone. Put the phone in the pocket, hit the power button, adjust the phone position in pocket accidentally turning the volume button up and then getting a text notification sound (instead of vibrate) at the exact wrong moment.
4. Cannot swap out batteries
5. Camera took some bad shots
6. Not a fan of the AOSP style pull down shade. On my S3 I rooted and did run some AOSP 4.4 roms but those at least had the ability to set a hot corner to get toggles instead of having to pull down and then hit the button in upper right corner. Not very one hand friendly.
7. Almost dropped it 10 seconds after picking it up as the aluminum body was kind of slick and it has no grip.

I will say that the phone worked very good as far as normal tasks. HTC Sense worked fine. The speakers were awesome. Sounded like I was waking up in a concert hall when the alarm went off in the morning. The above problems I had, although they might seem small to some, made the phone not user friendly for me and my situation. I think HTC is headed in the right direction but isn't quite there yet. I got my S5 and it is the perfect phone for me. I will say that it is nice the HTC phones are easily unlocked and rooted in comparison to Samsungs these days.

He was just giving his point of view. Nothing wrong with that :).

I have cases but use them rarely.

I was just pointing out that we the caseless are people too :)

So often we get left out because people just assume that everyone uses cases.

No harm no foul

Congratulations on getting the phone which suits you better. Nicely done.

Re: Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8)

I didn't mean anything personal. My point was, so many people make a big deal about they bought a phone BC it looked this way or that way, and they throw a case on it, so they can't tell what it looks like anyway!

I've had my S5 for a week now and I think I made the right decision, at least it's the right one for me. I'm sure that many who bought the M8 feel the same way. This is my first Samsung phone used as a daily driver. Since leaving Blackberry 6 years ago every daily driver until the S5 was a Motorola phone. While I'm hopeful that HTC improves the features on the M8 that I feel are most important to me I honestly doubt it will happen. Their obvious emphasis on things like style, music, selfies and zoeys doesn't appeal to me, and I expect the M9 will be no different in that regard. I don't mind features that I don't need and won't use as long as they don't interfere with what I do need and use. But those that are attracted to that kind of device should be represented, and HTC seems to be filling that niche. Competition and choice is a good thing.

I have to say I just bought me the m8 last week. I've been a Samsung person for a while. I decided to switch up and give HTC a chance. My experience is this. The camera is not too bad in my opinion. I'm not a photographer just an average Joe some. The speaker quality is pretty darn good to me. The build quality is nice as well. The UI is smooth no lags what so ever... The problem I'm having is that the signal issue is crappy with is phone. I only get one bar and I have Verizon. This is why I will be switching back to Samsung

I love my M8. I had a hard time deciding between the M8 and the S5, but I am very happy with my decision. I had an S3 previously and that helped me decide between the two I think.

The S5 felt cheaper than the S3 and I disliked that very much, probably what kept me from buying the phone the most. Buttons felt cheap and so did the phone overall. The M8 on the other hand is very nice and feels very well made. I love the metal and the weight to the phone. Even though I have a dot case covering it up, I love the feel of the case and I think it feels almost identical to the metal. The dot case is wicked awesome, look into it.

The TouchWiz software with the S5 is probably not much of an upgrade if not worse than that of the TouchWiz on the S3, probably more unneeded bloatware in fact. I am tired of the same old UI with TouchWiz to be honest, and I am much happier with Sense 6. I was looking for a simple android system like with the Nexus 5, and I think I found that with the M8. Software is super zippy and does not have any lag to it all.

I had a lot of worry about the M8's camera not being effective enough, but I am happy with it. Zoom feature on the phone is lacking, but I just get closer to what I want to take a picture of if that is the case. The Zoe feature with the phone is nice, but the quick shutter makes it unneeded in my opinion. The camera takes good pictures at face value, but when zooming in it does get a little blurry, but nothing I can't deal with. When bringing the pictures over to the computer they are large enough with enough detail to be satisfying.

Battery life seems very good and has made it everyday with around 30% juice left before getting back on the charger. Normal days for this phone is from 9am to 12am and I am impressed with its lifespan.

I really like the front speakers and to be honest I do not see how I lived without them. This phone also has a built in FM radio antenna which is a great feature. I do not have to use data when listening to music anymore. Speaking of antennas, I read that since the phone has a metal case that it would get worse reception, however I have found that not to be the case. The antenna gets better reception than my S3 did.

I would buy this phone again, even over the upcoming G3 I think.

Doesn't matter what kind of specs you toss into a device, low build quality is low build quality. Lame pleather, ridiculously thin plastic that doesn't weigh the least even with that godawful plastic, etc... It's just an awful device. They're still banking on putting Android on the map.

You mean the build quality that allows for short water submersion and dust resistance all while keeping a larger removable battery back plate? Yes, your right, the quality Samsung put into the s5 is sooooo horrible.

Water/dust-proofing isn't that compelling a feature really. Phones have been able to do it well for years. Doesn't change the fact that they use cheap feeling materials in the construction of their device. With the premium they charge for the S5, you'd think they could afford a strip of real leather instead of that plasticky feeling junk that they throw on the back of their plasticky feeling junk

I agree, I have little use for waterproofing anyway. The shiny plastic on the sides of the S5 are capable of chipping and flaking much easier than any damage that could occur to the M8. Removable backing does not equate to build quality. To me being a major fan of Samsung, I feel that Samsung has pushed out a product where they care less about a quality phone and more about profit margin. Marketing power is the only reason Samsung has done so well with their S5.

The plastic argument is ridiculous when the phone will end up In a plastic case anyway. I don't really like either phone but the htc has a terrible camera plus there is a common issue with the camera lens scratching.

It's not the fact that it's plastic. Most of my favorite phones are plastic. It's that it's a low quality plastic.
