You waited and waited the time is finally here...

Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 update is now available. Credit: Chris Parson/Android Central Blogs

Build # IMM76D

If your currently running stock ICS 4.0.3 you can follow the instructions below.

Keep in mind, this is for GSM devices only

  • Grab the OTA package here
  • Rename it to update.zip. This isn't needed for the Nexus S bootloader, but it makes things easy, if that's how you prefer them.
  • Copy it over to the internal storage on your Nexus S.
  • Power off, then hold volume up and power to reboot to the bootloader.
  • Using the volume key to navigate, select recovery, then use the power button to confirm
  • When you see the warning triangle and arrow, hold the power button and tap volume up. You'll see a menu.
  • From the menu, select "apply update from /sdcard", and choose update.zip from the list.
  • Let it do its thing and update your system, radio, and other partitions. When finished, choose "reboot system now"
  • Enjoy!

So now you have updated, lets here what you have to say....

Grats T-mo users! Hopefully this is a sign the Sprint version is getting close too. :)

Same, using stock 4.0.3 from the AC post a few months ago, not rooted/no mods at all and I get an Error status 7 message...Tmo nexus S

Google kinda reminds me of the Soup Nazi. See soup... no can have soup.

O:-)

You need to be completely stock, unrooted 4.0.3 for this update to work. If not, flash the 4.0.3 ota, reboot your device. Once done flash cwm via fastboot and then flash the update. Worked perfectly for me. You will need to root again though, but it's as easy as flashing superuser via cwm.

Although a quick loom through the xda nexus s development forum has a flash able zip of the update which is even easier.

I have been reading up on the update and have seen mixed results.

Complete stock seems to be the ticket but no promise there either for some. Those users end up turning around and installing CWM recovery and flashing the custom package/update.

Why things can't smooth, who knows.....

Hitting the following error after selecting the update.zip file in recovery from sdcard mode:

"E: Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted"

I had previously updated from 2.3.4 to 4.0.3 using an OTA available as download from android central. I hope that was stock 4.0.3!!

From what I have been gathering reading various posts at XDA on this subject you basically have two options...

1. Wait for the actual OTA update notification to push out, that should work.

2. Unlock your bootloader (yes this wipes the device)
2a. Install CWM recovery on the device
2b. Then flash the update.zip file using CWM and it seems to work.

I know bogus solutions but that seems to be what is working from everything I keep reading...

You can install the factory image from Google after unlock the bootloader. It worked for me...

With my Nexus S for Tmob it was rooted, tried to basically unroot and flash down to the stock then upgrade to the 4.0.3 manually but that is not working. Also, I locked the bootloader to try and see if it will work. Unsuccessful in getting the the OTA 4.0.4 to install as well. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I can confirm the OTA worked for me; I was also unable to update from stock recovery.
