[GUIDE] How to root, un-root and rom your Droid Incredible.

Just an FYI in case anyone else experiences the same issue I had -

On my first attempt to run unrevoked3, I got an error message that said, "Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?". A little research on the unrevoked website led me to a note where they said that Evo 4Gs occassionally had this problem due to incompatible apps running at the same time as unrevoke. Grant you, I have an Dinc, not an Evo, but I played a hunch and removed the Dolphin web browser that I'd installed last night.

Worked like a charm the second time around once Dolphin was removed.

need help

i tried to flash skyradier 4.0 on my droid inc using unrevoked3 now once i tried to flash my phone is stuck on the " htc incredible" boot screen really scared my phone is bricked please helppp!

rooting issues

:confused:having big problem trying to accomplish this. running windows by the way. first ive been on every droid forum site readin all post.

dowloaded unrevoked. then hboot drivers.
installed hbootdrivers correctly
did not recognize my phone.
installed htc sync and then unistalled htc sync but kept drivers from it.
then i reinstalled hboot drivers
enrevoked recognized me and attempted to flash,
went all the way through and said flash failed of CWM or something like that

(fearing my process of htc sync and hbott were backwards i)
then unistalled htc sync and hboot,
also unistalled anything having to do with verizon and htc (besides htc drivers)
redid process
installed htc sync, deleted it kept drivers
then installed the hboot again

same result however, says failed at the end

any help would be much appreciated came from droid 2, also on droid charge, so this is way out of my field

Use just the HBOOT Drivers - uninstall the HTCSync Drivers. I think that's where it's going wrong.

Good luck.

The HBOOT drivers should replace the HTC Drivers. When I rooted the PC I had never had HTC Sync on it.

Give it a shot from scratch following Bret's directions in the OP. It should work.

Also try a differnt USB port. I know it sounds silly, but it's worked before.

at school now going to try when i get home, if im not mistaken does it not say to downloard unrevoked forever and place it on the root of the sd, right, and if so when i do that, do i unzip and grab a certain file from unrevoked forever, also do i just put it on the root of the sd or install update.zip in recovery?

anyhow thanks for resonding and trying to help it is much appreciated.

No need to do Unrevoked Forever - the current Unrevoked does the Forever part automatically.

alright my man im fresh ou of ideas, been on every usb port, anything htc or verizon related has been deleted from my computer, and i dont know what to do next.

Are you using a "real" USB port, or a USB port in an external hub? Is the port powered up (if you're running Win7 it tends to "save you" by powering down the USB ports for some stupid reason). Is your phone's battery completely charged up before you start? Is your SD card formatted in FAT32 (yes it matters)?

Here is guide to return to stock if your having problems using the guide above.

First you MUST be using a Windows computer to use this guide.

1. You need to install HTC Sync on your computer which you will find here. HTC Mobile Phone Support - DROID INCREDIBLE by HTC (Verizon) - Downloads

2. Install the RUU file here.

3. Run the RUU file on your computer and it will guide you through the process and DO NOT disconnect your phone until your instructed to. Note in the RUU file there is a readme file with directions and FAQ to help you.

Using this method like any other you are taking a chance of bricking your phone.

Thanks for posting this method.
I've always been able to revert back to stock using PB31IMG.zip
For some reason I was unable to get it to work after numerous attempts.
This method work flawlessly. Thanks!!

My wife had to get a replacement INC, because hers is going haywire. It is coming to me at work, and the first thing im going to do is Root that bad boy!!! My question is, do I need to activate the phone before rooting, or can it be done afterwards???

Activate it first, then root it. No point in rooting the thing if it won't activate for some reason! ;)

Here is a simple guide to take your rooted phone back to stock, S-on, and stock recovery.

Before you start make sure you have a rooted Droid Incredible with clockworkmod recovery and have your sdcard formatted to fat32.
To format your card an easy way is to connect your Incredible with sdcard to your windows computer. On your device select disk drive, then using your computer open my computer and right click on your sdcard and select format fat32. Just like rooting, unrooting will remove all your third party app's and wipe your device.

How to tell if your s-on or s-off
1. Reboot into HBOOT and in the upper right it will tell you if your security is on or off by displaying s-on or s-off. To reboot hit the power button once, then using your volume key down select recovery and then hit the power button again. In recovery make sure reboot is highlighted and press down on your optical joystick.

Please note if your using 2.15.00.09.01 radio unrevoked s-on tool will not work. You will need to download this and flash that PB31IMG before you continue.

If your s-off then you need to download http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip to turn s-on.
1. Place the downloaded file on the root of your sdcard.
2. Reboot into recovery using any method.
-Using Rom Manager just open and select Reboot into Recovery
-Pull the battery for a few seconds, then put battery back in and power on while holding down the volume down key, once in HBOOT hit the power key once then use your volume down key to highlight “recovery” and hit the power button to select.
3. In recovery menu (use your volume keys or joystick to navigate through the menu) select “install zip from sdcard” and press on the optical joystick to select.
4. Then select “choose zip from sdcard”.
5. Find and select the file "unrevoked-forever-son.zip" you downloaded and placed on your sdcard.
6. Select “yes install unrevoked-forever-son.zip”.
7. Now your s-on - continue to the following directions to remove root and go back to your stock recovery.

If your s-on you need to download this file PB31IMG_3.26.605.1_RUU.zip
1. Check your sdcard for any file named PB31IMG.zip and remove it before moving to the next step
2. Rename the file you downloaded above to “PB31IMG.zip” without the quotes and place it on the root of your sdcard.
3. Boot into HBOOT by pulling your battery then power on while holding the volume down key.
4. Your phone should find the PB31IMG.zip file and start the update and may reboot a couple of times.
5. Reboot your phone and you should be back to stock :)
My work email software refuses to run on a rooted phone for security purposes. I am debating to what level I have to rejoin the masses that are slaves to the restrictions of HTC Sense from Verizon. I like the ROM, but want the free wifi tether and various other goodies.

I have several questions; if you set your phone to S=on using the link above does it revoke superuser permissions already granted and set to be remembered?

If I flash a ROM with unlocked capabilities (such as Cyanogen) and then un-root the phone (S=on) will the ROM have a problem, and will the features continue to work as part of the ROM?

My understanding of S-Off is that it allows you to flash radios, splash screens, animations and other aspects of the phones software beyond the ROM. I think you can be S-On and still be rooted since Rooting is Super User permissions not security permissions. You may be prevented from flashing additional ROM's but you should be OK with what you have. Worse comes to worse you run S-off install then run Unrevoked Forever again.

Not sure if S-On will solve your problem though. Does you e-mail app look for S-off? It's kind of manufacturer specific.

Hope this helps.

Does any one have a link to PB31IMG_3.26.605.1_RUU.zip? The link at the begining is bad now. I need to revert to stock so I can return it Asurion, because the front glass is destroyed. Thanks

You need s-off in order to remain rooted. If you have s-on and reboot, you will not be rooted. s-off will maintain permanent root, in addition to what pville said.
