[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

I had serious fc issues with super user a few days ago a well as many others after it got updates from the market. I uninstalled the updates from the market and everything has worked fine since.
In case you don't know. Applications > downloaded > click on superuser there should be an uninstall updates option. Worst case you can completely uninstall and reload the one you originally installed during your rooting process.

There is another topic a few of us talked about this issue here in the forum. I'd link it but i'm using taptalk and not sure how to search the other thread quickly.

Sent from my Synergy driven Thunderbolt...

All the files you need are in the first post. I don't think you can go back and use ROM Manager to install CWM. I never tried this root method (used DroidXcons Auto Root) but if I remember correctly... Revolutionary installs its own version of CWM Recovery.

Thanks for the reply. The Revolutionary zip package didn't include a version of CWM. During the root process, Revolutionary required an internet connection to download CWM Recovery and then install it. This is where I'm stuck :( WIthout the internet connection, Revolutionary crashes. If I type 'n' to not install CWM, Revolutionary comments to manually flash the recovery and then shuts down.

well, i uninstalled the SU update... i was able to open super user for a little while, then i tried to access the BAMF settings and it sad no root access... root checker confirms that i actually do have root access... titanium backup also said it didnt have root access. i uninstalled TB, but i dont know how to uninstall SU completely because the regular app manager doesnt have the option for SU and i havent learned how to do it otherwise yet.

Have you tried rebooting the phone... It usually helps to check with checking for any new updates. Also if you can get into ROM Manager... Try fixing permissions. Or manually boot into recovery with the power + volume down buttons and go to recovery and try the option for fixing permissions.

i think i figured it out... what i did was simply re-flash the "SU Zip" provided in the OP... so far so good, i havent been getting all of the force closes i used to get with apps that need root access... fingers crossed that itll stay that way...

from what ive read people seem to think that the SU update and the updated binaries are the cause of all the issues. looks like they might b right.

Okay good... Yea, when I opened SU... It said the binaries needed to be updated. Again... I'm not sure which solution eventually fixed the permission errors for me but you're probably right about it being the outdated binaries. It seems to be the common cause.

Okay. For a school administrator working sixty hours per week and three children, two dogs and two cats, this looks enormously time-consuming to unroot, even if this was the easiest rooting process I ever could have imagined. If I just flash the latest RUU and send it back to Verizon with an earpiece issue, am I likely to get caught?

Okay... Very simple. Which root method did you use?

If you used anything but Revolutionary... You can just flash the RUU and it will bring the phone back to stock unrooted which can be then sent back to Verizon.

If you used Revolutionary to root. You need to follow the unroot guide... Its the only way to unroot the Revo method.

I'm sorry I didnt read through the whole thread. I did the root, and am now trying to move bloat to my SD card. It says move failed. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I am using ASTRO file manager

If it's not already built into the ROM you choose, look up Wireless Tether. I've read of another one called Barnacle. I've never used nor know anything about Barnacle though. Wireless Tether works great for me so I had no reason to check another one out.

Download links Here.
I'm using version 2.0.7.

If I were to accidentally flash or have an ota pushed to my phone and lost revo root what would I do to restore root (s off).

I have entered the beta key 6 times and it always says aborting invalid code?? Help please?

EDIT: Helped myself by watching the youtube video!

You shouldn't lose root.... But worse case scenario... Your phone goes into a bootloop or wont start normally. You already have everything backed up... Thanks to having root access. You would manually boot into recovery through hboot (power + volume down) and flash the Gingerbread RUU returning your phone back to Verizon factory stock conditions. Then root the phone again and restore your backup. Worse case scenerio!

I assume the permanent hboot installed by revo would still be there so to root again would I merely flash su.whatever that I saved after doing revo the first time or go through all the steps of revo or what?

You might think its silly but I like to know this stuff B4 I need to.

I have a few questions from a newbe.

1. If I use this method to root my phone will it prevent me from being able to update my phone when the GB OTA update is re-released?
2. Once I do the OTA GB update will it un-root my phone?

Thanks for answer my questions
