[GUIDE] How To Root/Unroot The Thunderbolt with Revolutionary

Yes.... you wont be able to select recovery unless the pg05img.zip is off of the root of the sd card.... otherwise everytime you boot into hboot, it will automatically try to start the upgrade process of the pg05img.zip.

Try a different usb cord. I had that issue when I was rooting a buddies incredible, cord works fine for my Tbolt, but when I hooked it up to the incredible it didn't stay connected.
The VZW thing that pops up is normal, just X it. No harm in that still being around.
If the different cord does not help if you have the option, try a different computer.

I just used the usb that came with the phone, but I have a blackberry usb that my gf has I can try, its at my work ill have to try it tomorrow am ill let you know what happens

Thanks, I must have missed that in the instructions. I'll get back to it....

Well, I missed the part about replacing the zip files, and, did not know that the "Menu & arrow" buttons were still activated and useful. Very useful to say the least. I am a visual person and if I can't see it in a video or read it in the directions then I don't initiate the action until I get desperate. I got desperate to try anything which most people, I guess, would have tried long ago.

I tryed another cord an now it won't go past the zerging root now an stays there for awhile so Idk what to do, Imma try another computer when I get around one an can...if I do get this to work will it get rid of the vzw pop up when the phones pluged in if I delete most of the vzw stuff

I have a gingerbread radio so when I get to the last 2 steps that install mr2 will it work or do I need to flash a froyo radio before I unroot?

You have to be on that Froyo radio that's listed in the unroot guide. Its the only way to unroot the phone. The first zip file downgrades the radio and the second zip file restores the locked bootloader (unroots). If you don't downgrade the radio first and only flash the second zip.... you're gonna screw up your phone.

I should have known you'd have every necessary step! I didn't notice that one of your steps flashed back to a froyo radio.

One guy commented (in another thread) that adb didn't recognize the fastboot command that varifies you serial number the second time. Any idea why?

Hmm I'm stuck at zerging root.....this might take a minute or so.. which is less progess then the other day when I was messing with it an it made it to fastboot

So I have been stuck on the waiting for device for a while now. I found a fix that worked for me. I had the revolutionary.exe file open and i rebooted my phone. It picked it up as soon as the computer saw there was a phone connected. Everything after that worked great and thanks for the help.

I unrooted my phone by flashing PG05IMG_1.70.605.0_nohboot.zip file, which leaves the Revolutionary on the phone and the s-off is still there also. I updated the phone to gingerbread and am trying to re-root. To do this I press the power and v-down to get to the page where is says revolutioary and s-off on top. I select recovery to get to the su file but it just goes to the exclamation point screen. Also there is no more fastboot option under applications settings. Does revolutionary not work with gingerbread? Or am I doing something wrong? I deleted all the pg05img files from sd card.
Help please.

Yes, I do. That is what it was. New to all of this. Does a ROM increase hotspot connectivity speed? If yes, what is a good choice for that?

Just to report my thanks and success at getting this working on a Mac!:

MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
VirtualBox 4.1.6 (with Extension Pack installed to enable USB 2.0 EHCI Controller, don't know if that was necessary)
Host OS: Linux Ubuntu 11.10

Followed the directions with the following differences:
-ENABLED fastboot on phone (Settings ? Power ? Fastboot) before starting
-Skipped the steps about the HTCDriver file (not necessary in Linux)
-From revolutionary.io website, get the Linux version (I used revolutionary-0.4pre4.tgz)
-After unziping it, in a terminal window (in Linux) run su ./revolutionary
-IMPORTANT: during the fastboot process you will have to re-establish USB connection to the phone a couple times by REselecting the phone from the USB devices list (bottom, right of VirtualBox window)

Watch the video, it helps.

Cheers! :D
