[GUIDE] How to Root Your Nook Color

Help!
I'm an exasperated Mac and new NC owner. I have an EVO I successfully rooted and thought this would be easy.. and I cant figure it out

I am at 1.01 firmware. I downloaded auto-nooter.zip and extracted it to an .img file. I use terminal on mac.. identify my SD card's drive number and unmount it successfully. When I try the "dd if=auto-nooter-2.12.25.img of=/dev/rdisk# bs=1m" command (with the correct disk number and version) I get a response "no such file or directory"

Where do I keep the .img file? is it on my main directory on the mac? on the sd card? how does dd find the necessary auto-nooter file?

also when i unmount the drive.. it "disappears" from my desktop on the mac. is that why it cant be found? what is the remedy

when I dont play in termninal, my sd card is visible and I can drag files onto it, format it, etc

I'm by far not an expert so I don't want to give you bad advice but it worked to me with /dev/disk(and your drive #) not rdisk hope that works.

The intructions say (The first recommended step to take is to install the 1.01 official Nook software update (if your Nook is still on version 1.0 - see above for determining version). The software version on my NC is 1.1.0
Is there a mistake in the instructions or is there a different version? Will these instructions work on ver. 1.1.0?

just wanted to update.. figured it out on my mac..
you have to list where the auto-nooter file is.. easiest way is to drag the file onto terminal and it automatically enters the address where it is located

Resolved: "Initial loading from the Media Provider failed"

After the NC booted back up, the main home page wallpaper kept flashing on and off, and an error box with a message that began "Initial loading from the Media Provider failed" kept flashing up.

Neither side loader worked so I did the 8x reset reboot (power on device and power it off as soon as you see text - after 8 it auto loads the factory settings/firmware). From here I reran the Auto Nooter 1.0 and everything worked great.

I'll gladly donate to any "auto nooter" that has a functioning Honeycomb on it. PM me with details if you are working on this.

Well, my SD cards arrived, so I'm about to give this a try. Wish me luck! :p

After the adventure I had getting my NC back to version 1.0.0, it's funny that now the first step in the rooting process is to force the 1.1.0 update again. Oh well, it's been a learning experience. :)

I'll let you folks know if I hit any issues during the rooting process.

Okay, that seemed to have maybe worked. :)

I got the new boot screen and and a bunch of new things in the "Extras" menu. I'm working through the instructions for enabling the Market, now. The Menu button in the YouTube app did not work. That's noted to be a bug in 1.0.1, but perhaps it happens in 1.1.0 as well? It would seem so.

I was told to reboot if the button didn't work, so I powered down. I was then slightly alarmed when the NC refused to power back up. I then remembered that the Auto-Nooter SD card was still inserted, so I removed it. It still wouldn't turn on. So I plugged it into my computer again. That made it start up. Whew. Let's hope I don't have to do that every time. ;)

And now the menu button works in the YouTube app! Excellent. Baby steps. I'm utterly baffled by all the popups I'm getting asking if I want to complete actions using "Home", or "SoftKeys". But I'm sure that's a subject for another thread!

I used this method to root my Nook. Worked great with a few bugs:

1. Installed ROM Manager, flashed Clockworkmod recovery... started CWR, adn got stuck in it. hit reboot system, and it would only reboot back into CWR. On XDA, there's a thread that has a zip file that removes CWR so you can get out of this boot loop. Since ROM Manager uses CWR to load new ROMS and Kernals... can we get any indication that this is being addressed?

2. I use xscope as my browser, and I have a very hard time having a touch registered in the bottom right hand corner. someone else on XDA indicated they had this problem as well... is this the result of the rooting with 3.0? or just rooting a nook in general?

One last question: do I have to worry about B&N pushing an OTA update on me and breaking root?

Thanks for any insight, and great job with the rooting tutorial. the steps are very clear.

I've tried to root my NC multiple times, from this guide, and from the one on NookDevs(not trying to sponsor another site, please don't ban me). I start at the beginning with the 8x wipe and factory reset and go from there. I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, NC version 1.1.0, using the autonooter 3.0.0 made for 1.1.0, and it never runs the autonooter from my card. Everything burns to the card like it should, but the NC never loads it when I plug in the USB cable. Anyone think they can help?

I believe I rooted successfully. Pandora works fine, youtube works fine, BUT when I click on the Market there are only a limited selection to download from. For example I can only see Angry Birds Season and when doing a search for Angry Birds, it only shows Angry Birds Season. Is there a way to see ALL apps in the Market besides the select few?

From what I understand, Angry Birds recently did an update (to include the secret level that was linked to the super bowl ad code). They accidentallly clicked "need access to sms"... the market knows that our devices don't need use SMS, so we can't load this app, and so it doesn't show it to us. This sort of makes sense to me (can you see any apps that would be SMS related?).

I believe if you can find and download the new angry birds apk file, you can install using astro. find the apk, save on sd card, and then locate through astro and press to install. I haven't done this yet, so I'm not 100% sure it works.

I'm not getting off the ground with this.
I'm stuck at the 1.1 upgrade on a brand new Nook.
I copied sideload_update.zip to the root of the Nook. Ejected the usb and waited as per the B&N directions. The screen went blank after a couple minutes and it just sat there for about 20 minutes.
I called B&N tech support and they tried to tell me it was due to wireless latency! They finally said it would take up 3-4 hours for it to install the update.
I hit the home button and it woke up, so I powered off and back on. Clicked on power to blank the screen and it's been sitting about 30 minutes with a blank screen.

How long does the 1.1 upgrade take??

The update only took a few minutes on my new NC. I followed the instructions exactly. It just reboots and installs the zip file. Wireless latency my @ss! It may have taken a while but I'm sure it was less than 20 mins. Perhaps you could turn it right off with the sleep and N button pressed at the same time and boot it back up before your next attempt. I hope you get it sorted out!

I also went through the fantastic instructions here and rooted my NC after playing around with the HC images. They're doing a fantastic job here. I installed all the recommended apps. Everything works fine so far, and I can read my huge collections of illustrated PDF books with ezPDF reader instead of those awful supplied ones. Thanks for this Will!

Yeah, I couldn't belive he said that. He tried to tell me the update file was in short supply and would take awhile to get here. I told him I already had it and it was on the Nook but the Nook was ignoring it.

I followed the instructions exactly as well. Both these and the ones on the B&N site.
Once I copy Sideload_update.zip to the root of the Nook, Ie tried all of the methods recommended. At the end the file is gone and it's still setting at 1.0.1.

I received this today from B&N,,, I'm wondering if they changed something?
I'm going to call back during day shift and see if I can get someone who knows what he's talking about.

wowwww i had my nook rooted for a good 2 hours and was loving it to death when i decided to venture into the nook store and and suddenly my nook shut off and a loading screen saying it's clearing all data and updating my system comes up.

laameee. guess i'll have to do this all over again =/
