[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

ok, i completed the rooting last night, and my phone is sucking battery juice like there is no tomorrow. what did i do wrong. when i look at what is using the battery, it says android system 100 percent usage. unplugged for an hour and i am down 25 percent, and i have an extended battery.

The rooting alone shouldn't affect your battery life. Its probably just coincidence. Check your email settings and don't have too many apps auto syncing. I'm getting great battery life with set cpu. Now that you're rooted, try flashing some different roms. Maybe try one of the roms that has the battery saver scripts built in, and u won't even have to buy set cpu.

Also, after a full charge, try bump charging a few times, then go to recovery and reset ur battery stats.

Big Thanks @ thefredelement. I finally took the plunge and rooted my evo yesterday. Set up was flawless.

do i download titanium after step 7 and do my back up or is this whole process just temp sorry if i am just so lame not to figure this on my own just want to make sure i keep my apps

is there a name for this way of rooting? i hear everyone saying UnRevoked3 or Cyanogen type rooting.

This type of rooting, I guess you can call "the long way" - the process really involves changing some permissions then flashing HTC engineering software, then exploiting the engineering recovery software to push custom recovery software. Then by way of that recovery, pushing unrevoked-forever which changes a security bit in the phone's radio that will allow you to flash whatever software you want to your Evo. After that, Sprint Lovers rom is loaded on to your phone.

Sorry if this was mentioned already, but can I do this on a mac?

You actually don't need some of the drivers for a mac as your Evo will be recognized by the sdk without them.

As long as you can replace the windows/dos style stuff with terminal stuff you should be fine to follow along the same process as nothing is executed in windows - you just use the command prompt to access adb to push files and start some programs on the phone.

ok so i made it up to step 6 and its telling me that it cant find my phone..is there a a easier way to root my EVO..first timer here

I finaly took the plunge! Thank you for the detailed instructions! Only have one issue. In "people" all my contacts have thier facebook pics showing. When I get a message from someone though no ones pics show. just the blank box. Anyone else have this issue and know how to fix it?

when i extract the files (after the md5 checker) do i need to go into all the folders of the newly extracted items and extract everything inside as well?

for example, when i open the pc36img folder there are two more rar files inside. one is called pc36img-eng and the other is called pc36img-mr.. do i need to extract these as well? or am i done after the intial extraction that i performed after the md5 check?

Just the first one, the rest are archives for your phone. You should NOT open them.

I just started this process and am on step 2. When I plugged my device into the computer I didn't see any drivers loading and the HTC sync program shows no device connected. Did I do something wrong? Help.

adb help

I'm trying to get started but, after I input this

adb push root/unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/

the command prompt tells me it doesn't know what to do with 'adb'. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Phone is on Charge only.

Thanks ahead of time.

Windows should install them really fast, make sure you have USB debugging on.

You need to make sure you're in the right directory with your command prompt. (Where you extracted the zip to)

C:\evoroot>adb -d install -r root/z4root.apk
can't find 'root/z4root.apk' to install

This file does indeed not exist. Did something change?
