[GUIDE] Rooting 3.7/Hboot2.02+ w/screen shots (1/27/2011)

After rooting, my data speeds are low at aout 200kbps, full signal strength, is there anything I may have done wrong.

Great tutorial!! The thought of bricking my EVO deterred me from rooting for months lol. Then i saw post. Picture Tutorial FTW!! :)

ok,I have spent several days reviewing and contemplating the whole rooting process, which rooting guideline should I use?

Wow. I have spent the better part of a month researching on whether or not to try rooting my Evo but this thread, after reading through every single post on every page finally gave me the confidence to do it.
A special thanks to n4mrc on page 20 who only temp rooted his phone with z4root to get wifi-tethering. That's really all I wanted out of this was to temp root and tether. I may full root in the future with this guide but as of now I'm good.
HEAR ME ON THIS!!!- Even if you don't full root at least try the temp root with z4root. It makes the whole rooting process seem less intimidating.
Thanks to everyone in this thread who helped along the way to tweak the root guide to perfection.

Hi and welcome! I spent a lot of time reading and researching too and ultimately decided to root "the long way" using the pictoral tutorial. I went that route because although it is more involved you learn a lot about using manual recovery and using the command line. You also develop more of an understanding of what you are doing and why. You also learn about where things are located so if by chance you do need to get more involved in the future to fix something you will feel more comfortable. Also, by following the long guide, you root, install Amon Ra recovery, and Sprint Lovers ROM, which is close to stock. You can always move on to changing kernals and experimenting with other roms later if you'd like, but this is a really good start.

It is smart of you to go into this being well prepared. Both methods work so neither is more right than the other. I just gave you the reasons for doing what I did. Good luck and hope that helps :)

im all new to this and would like to get the free wifi on my phone (i have pdaNet right now) so i would work my way up to step 7 with z4root? after that how would i apply the wifi option? i dont want to mess my phone up...thanks

I was working through the processes that you have up here (which are very helpful and everything works like you say). I got to step 17 and it did not go to the next screen like it says in your steps. I didn't know what to do and accidentally clicked the power button to reboot the system. Now my phone stays frozen on the HTC Evo 4g screen. What should I do?

using stock rom

Can i root with this method and not use the sprint lovers rom?? Just keep what is already on the phone?

Start at #12 by booting your phone in to the bootloader by turning it on pressing volume down & power at the same time, skip step 13 and then continue.

You can root with this method and then switch to a rooted stock ROM, or just use Unrevoked and root what you have now without losing any data.

Try fastboot first, then:

21. Select Bootloader from the menu with the power button, it will scan the renamed PC36IMG.zip file on the sdcard (Sprint Lover?s ROM), select Yes and apply the update, then select Yes to reboot when it?s done.

Great!

THANKS!

I've been lurking around here for awhile somewhat hesitant about rooting but on a whim I decided to take the plunge.

This is a fantastically written guide, I was able to complete it in an hour and the Sprint Lover's Rom is completely user friendly...

Now, where to go next!?

Root tutorial for HTC Evo Build 3.70

The instructions were clear and accurate... it worked exactly as stated... great job!

The great thing is you can go anywhere you want! As for me, I am still using Sprint Lovers because I actually like it. You can change kernals, ROM (some people flash a new one almost daily) and use setcpu to modify settings to prolong battery life just to name a few things you can do. I've just been doing a lot of reading and may try another ROM but the great thing is you can do as much or as little as you like. There are lots of threads out thrre for your reading pleasure. Enjoy! ;)

Quick question. If I export all my contacts to my SD Card, will I have them after I root?

Yes you will.

Also if you have a google account tied to your phone you can re - import them from the sd card as Google contacts and they will stay saved with Google (so no matter what happens to your phone your contacts are always saved).

Stuck on step 7

Hey everyone,

I am currently trying to root my evo following the guide. I am on step 7 and push the 2nd line. However at the end it says, Error: argument expected after "-n"
So it never temporary rooted my phone. If anyone can help me with this I'll appreciate it!
