[Guide] Tools and Information for Mac OS X Users - Updated 04/07

I think I might be having the same problem. Did you flash clockworkmod recovery from ROM manager after 1-click-root? I didn't, that is where I think I went wrong. I don't have access to my Mac right now.

I have issues with some apps now that I'm rooted. Can I use the un-rooted instructions on page 1 without it affecting 2.2?

In other words, I've followed all the instructions on page 1 to get to 2.2 and now wonder if I can simply un-root and everything else will stay the same or do I need a PC and Odin because it's necessary to go back to 2.1 once un-rooted?

The 1-click-unroot may or may not work on 2.2. My question is why do you want to unroot?

Using

and I don't have root access, but I DO have the su icon.
This is what I get when I try to plug my Fascinate into my mac and run the root program..

Adell-Coulliette-IIIs-MacBook-Pro:Files AdellCoullietteIII$ /1-click-root/Files/root.sh
Starting installation...
Copying files...
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found
error: device not found

So, I re-downloaded set cpu and tried to see if it would work and it said that it can't get root access..
I'm going to try rebooting and see if I get it then.
Samsung...
Galaxy S...
Verizon Wireless...
Lockscreen...
Media Scanner...
Touch Set CPU...
Root Access Not Detected
-----------------------------
Set CPU could not obtain root access. Did you allow Set CPU through Superuser Permissions? If you checked Superuser Permissions and SetCPU still cannot get root, there may be an issue with your ROM. Operating in read-only mode.

The main question is.. How do I get my mac to recognize my phone???
I have the stock OTA EA28 update. It keeps saying Error device not found, so I'm guessing it can't see my phone. I know there's a quick fix to this, but what is it? I just can't seem to find this quick fix...

Try the updated 1-click-root with device detection

Ok i have tried this but keep getting error: device not found when i try to put in the kernal what do i do now

Root worked?

Make sure your phone is connected properly and try again. If root worked, theres not reason the kernel/cwm would not install

Do not use ROM manager to flash anything!!!

The 1-click-unroot may or may not work on 2.2. My question is why do you want to unroot?

I've having issues with Mixzing and PowerAmp. In the PowerAmp forum the developer said the issue is a problem with rooted phones. That's the ONLY reason I want to un-root but I don't want to loose 2.2 so that's why I was wondering if I could have my cake and eat it too :)

Haha gotcha. I'll test it out and let ya know.

Thanks, I apreciate it.

Also, seems like I read somewhere that there is a Gingerbread rom for the Galaxy S- is it possible to use all your instructions and flash with this rom?

Galaxy S is not the phone you have if you have a fascinate. You can try to flash it but it most likely wont work and it will be a heck of a time making your phone functional again, especially without a windows based PC

I've had so much trouble removing "root" even tho I don't have any root access. I have SuperUser installed in my phone but will not grant permission to anything. And now that I've found a way to remove it, it gives me an error message. I have the old SuperUser icon, the one with the Android mascot wearing an eyepatch and crossbones. Isn't the updated one a little ninja? (i'm not sure if this has anything to do with the error I get)

Well, I tried rooting and unrooting but nothing seems to actually give me root access. Can someone help me?

Mac-user with questions about rooting/Froyo

Hi everyone-

First post here. I've been looking over a number of threads on this forum about the rooting/upgrading process for the Fascinate, but I want to be perfectly clear on things before taking the plunge myself.

I'm on a Mac running 10.6, but I do have boot camp (just hardly use it) if I need to be on Windows for part of this. My Fascinate has the latest Verizon OTA update, I don't know what number that is. My questions:

1) can any of the builds for 2.2 (maybe the ones with the Verizon software stripped out) mount to a Mac normally, like how the phone used to work before this feature was removed? This is the single most frustrating thing about the Fascinate for me, it's the one issue that's driving me to consider rooting/hacking.

2) Does the rooting/upgrade process described here: [Guide] Tools and Information for Mac OSX Users work for getting the phone to the latest build of 2.2 without installing Odin? Also, does the software in that thread include any way to back things up first, or is that something that should be downloaded separately, after root but before upgrading? How do I back up my phone so I can restore it?

3) Is the battery life under 2.2 significantly worse than it is now?

Thanks to everyone for all the info here!

1) Yes, if you update you can mount the Fascinate on you Mac as mass storage

2) You do not need Windows or Odin if you follow the instructions at the beginning of this thread- someone else will have to answer about backing it up; after I finished the process (which took me several tries), everything was pretty much un-touched without the Verizon bloatware.

3) The battery life seems about the same for me, which means it lasts all day and I charge it at night just like before- someone else may have better stats

I was also squeamish and not too sure I wanted to or was smart enough to do this, but I'm glad I did since I no longer have to wait for Verizon/Samsung to do what others on here are able to do in their spare time! Amazing. And no PC involved :)

Hey I'm sorry if this has been answered I've been trying to read around but there's just so much new information to go through it's kinda hard. But when I flashed a kernel I lost CWM is there anyway to get it back on the mac and not having to odin the updated SC2.9.2 on? I really would like to feed my flashing addiction again asap haha.

Have you tried applying update.zip in the stock recovery?

Titanium backup or my back up pro are great for saving the vital information. Once you install clockworkmod you can back up your entire rom.
