[GUIDE] UPDATED: How to Root Your Sprint Galaxy S3

Re: [GUIDE] UPDATED10/23/2013: How to Root Your Sprint Galaxy S3

I was able to successfully root a completely stock (including Knox) Sprint Galaxy S III with the MK3 4.3 build using the saferoot method in this thread: [ROOT] Saferoot: Root for VRUEMJ7, MK2, and Android 4.3 - xda-developers. It does not replace the stock recovery, does not remove the Knox bootloader and does not trigger the Knox e-fuse. The only odd thing I noticed is that I received a few notifications during the process regarding the security policy but they were safe to ignore.

Just rooted my device this past Monday and today, I'm getting these errors while trying to update my apps. I'm stock (4.1.2) rooted. Was I suppose to flash gapps or something?!?! Is it possible that these apps are updated for 4.3?!?!

Re: [GUIDE] UPDATED10/23/2013: How to Root Your Sprint Galaxy S3

Question for anyone: I have a rooted Sprint Galaxy S3 running a custom ROM. Is it possible to take a stock SGS3 where someone has taken the 4.3 update, which includes Knox, and Odin back to ICS, JB 4.1.1 or 4.1.2?

I finished post #625 too soon. The reason I ask this question is to know whether or not that would be a way around trying to root a 4.3 S3 with Knox?

No, I don't think that's the issue. Most devs are pretty good about retaining backward compatibility, and if the app would only run on 4.3 the play store shouldn't let you update at all.

This really isn't a rooting question, so if this doesn't work I'd suggest starting a new thread with an appropriate subject line. But try this: Go into Settings / Device manager, All apps tab, and find the two download apps. Clear Data in both. Then find the Play store app and clear cache. Then try downloading the apps again.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is NO! If a phone has the 4.3 kernel and bootloader, using Odin to load an older ROM will hard brick the phone. Permanently.

But 4.3 can be easily rooted. You can't load a new kernel, but you can root, flash a custom recovery, and flash custom ROMs. See this thread, especially post #30. That process has worked for virtually everyone who has tried it:

I was only wondering since it is possible to Odin back to Android 4.1.1 or 4.0 from 4.1.2. Therefore, it only seemed feasible to Odin back from 4.3 to an older Android version through the download mode. For instance, if someone accepted the Samsung 4.3 update and then later wanted to go back to an older version since it is easy to root. Then again, if there is already a root to get past Knox then I suppose my former statements are moot?

Re: [GUIDE] UPDATED10/23/2013: How to Root Your Sprint Galaxy S3

Sorry if it seemed like I was yelling at you. I just want to make sure that no one who reads this comes away with the wrong idea. You're correct that you can use Odin to go from 4.1.2, or any earlier version, to an other version. But 4.1.2 and prior versions don't have Knox.

The 4.3 OTA (or via Kies, or Odin) installs the new bootloader with Knox. And Knox is designed to protect itself from being overwritten. It is my understanding that the most recent version of Kies will warn you if you try to flash 4.1.2 or earlier over 4.3. But older versions of Kies, and Odin, will attempt to flash the phone, and Knox trips the fuse to prevent the phone from being hacked. The idea is that if you have very sensitive information in the knox partition on your phone, and it falls into the wrong hands, they can't flash a knox-free ROM to bypass security.

As for being moot, yes and no. The root procedure still leaves the Knox bootloader on the phone, so you're still stuck with the stock 4.3 kernel. To the best of my [imperfect] knowledge you can't flash a custom kernel once the official 4.3 has been installed. But you can flash customs recoveries and ROMs.

No, I never took anything you wrote to me in response to my inquiry as yelling so please don't feel as though you were. :-) Anyhow, I was just wondering for really no specific reason other than my own personal knowledge.

Ok, I just did it. Hopefully that takes care of it. Thanks for your help Meyerweb! Appreciate it tremendously!!

Re: [GUIDE] UPDATED10/23/2013: How to Root Your Sprint Galaxy S3

Just wanted to tell the community here that I figured out what was causing my error updating/downloading my apps. I was getting an error message ([RPC:S-3]). For some reason, when I rooted my stock (4.1.2) device, it switched my main google account to my jobs google account that I also had installed. Once I switched back to my main account, error was gone. :)

It should work fine, but I have no personal experience with Virgin. I know it's been used on an S3 flashed to Page Plus.

what am i doing wrong or am i missing anything? i am able to install android 4.1.2 and one rom that is 4.3. but alot of roms out there is giving me a "status 7 installation aborted".
i am able to install slim rom and an old rom 4.1.1. i have tried to install hell fire, cm 11, android 4.4 and have the same error message. i just want to install android 4.4 and i would be happy. i did install the latest cm bootloader. i even flashed in the twrp bootloader and still failed the rom installation. another thing i noticed is alot of the roms that i installed did not have voicemail. that is kind of frustrating. what happened to voicemail?? is there something wrong with my phone? i have sprint galaxy s3. any help would be great, thanks in advance.

I read somewhere that TWRP has some sort of issue with cm11 and that it wouldn't work, I even tried it, and came to that same conclusion. I'm not too familiar with those other ROMs, so I don't have much to say on that. In the case that you do have TWRP as your recovery, try replacing it with clockwork mod and see it it helps. It worked for me, and I was able to flash cm11.

If you are able to install certain ROMs and not others doesn't sound like a TWRP issue, it sounds like a MD5 sum issue due to a bad or corrupt download. Therefore if I were you, I would check that first. I cannot tell you how many times I have downloaded corrupt files because of crappy Internet connections or download sites with less than par servers.

Good luck! :-)
