[GUIDE]Updating to rooted gingerbread WITHOUT flashing a new ROM or wiping your phone

OK... updated SuperUser and its now acting correctly

... didn't solve my situation with not being able to copy out the OTA though

I found the OTA on the web, dowloaded it my computer, placed it on the phones SD card and the rest of the instructions worked as described

Here is what worked for me:

As modplan originally said in his post:

This assumes you:
- Have the latest FROYO OTA installed 3.70.651.1
- Have some experience working with flashing things in recovery
- Have NOT deleted/uninstalled ANYTHING in /system
- Have defrosted any bloat you froze with Bloat Freezer or Ti Backup Pro
- Have S-OFF (Used Unrevoked Forever or a version of Unrevoked3 that includes Forever)

1. Go ahead and download the OTA like normal on your phone, but DO NOT install it (after it downloads you get the option to install now or not).
2. Using a file manager move the OTA zip file from /cache to /sdcard (use Root Explorer if you can't find it with astro etc...because the OTA does download to /cache.)
3. Get a copy of Amon RA Recovery 2.3 and manually install it (place the Amon RA 2.3 PC36IMG.zip in root of your sd card (/sdcard) and flash by restarting your phone while holding power and volume down). Nothing against ClockWorkMod recoveries, or Rom Manager, but for some reason I had problems with them for this process and I tried several versions.
4. After Amon RA 2.3 is installed, reboot into recovery. (reboot phone while holding pwr and volume down and choose recovery).
5. Select "Flash zip from SD Card">"Choose zip from sdcard", then find and flash the OTA zip file that you put in /sdcard.
6. Let the OTA do it's thing, and after it's flashed and your phone is booted back up, verify that the OTA took (go to settings>about phone>software information). You should see Android Version 2.3.3, Software number 4.22.651.2 etc. Then go to settings > applications > and disable FastBoot (re-enable this when you are done with the whole process if you want).
7. Reflash Amon RA 2.3 manually again...yes again (installing the OTA will probably brake Amon RA recovery and will need to be reinstalled. See step 3).
8. Reboot (you can now delete or move the Amon RA 2.3 PC36IMG.zip from /sdcard if you want to.) and place the latest Gingerbread superuser file (see attachment) in the root of your SD card (/sdcard). Other versions did not work for me. Some even caused lockups at boot.
9. Power off and reboot back into Amon RA 2.3 recovery.
10. Select "Flash zip from SD Card">"Choose zip from sdcard". Then find the attached Gingerbread compatible superuser file that you copied to the /sdcard and flash it to restore root permissions to your phone. Reboot and you should be good to go.

Special thanks to modplan for posting the original guide and creating Bloat Freezer!

OK, I've done the upgrade to GB (was rooted before) and it looks good and seems to work fine - but - I can't get my hotspot to work. I get Sprints default "you're not signed up for Sprint Wifi/Hotspot" or some such. Is Hotspot working on this GB release? If not, is there a workaround?

2. Using a file manager copy the OTA zip file from /cache to /sdcard
3. Using Rom Manager, flash Amon RA Recovery 2.3 (Down at the bottom)
4. In Rom Manager, click the Reboot into Recovery button.
5. Select apply zip from SD Card and flash the OTA zip file that you put in /sdcard

--10 Minutes later.....you now have the UNROOTED OTA installed just as if you installed it normally--

6. Download the 2.6.0.1 ClockWorkMod Recovery zip from here and place it in the root of your SD card
7. Under settings > applications > disable FastBoot (re-enable this when you are done with the whole process)
8. Power off and reboot holding Volume down. The bootloader will scan and then will and ask you to press Volume up to install. Reboot.
9. Delete the PC36IMG.zip file from your SD card and place the attachment below in the root of the SD card.
10. Power off and reboot holding Volume down and then select recovery to start CWM recovery.
11. Choose apply zip from sd card. Choose select zip on sd card. You will see the SU file on the list, flash it to root your phone. Reboot.

You should now be rooted and can upgrade the recovery now to whatever style and version you want!

Enjoy! Please click the THANKS button if it worked for you! :D
is there any benefit over staying with Amon Ra or Clockwork Mod Recovery? I currently have Clockwork on my rooted Evo. I am going to attempt this on my wife's Evo.

You can sure try it with Clockwork, as apparently others have had success. In my experience, there were problems when using Clockwork and Rom Manager in this particular case (nothing against Clockwork or Rom Manager!). See post #44 above for what worked for me. It is essentially the same process, but all flashing is done manually. I ended up using Amon RA 2.3 instead of Clockwork and did not use Rom Manager. You should also consider using the latest superuser file (see the attachment in post #44) if you have problems with the other versions.

The only problem I had with this is that SuperUser keeps force closing. Is it possible to just flash the latest SU zip instead of going back through the whole process?

You might as well try. But be sure to flash the one I attached in post #44 above.

FYI:

Tonite I downloaded the latest OTA, 4.24.651.1 and was able to update from 4.22.651.2 to the new one using the same method as posted above (#44) with zero problems. Just to be cautious, I did wipe the dalvik cache just before flashing the OTA. Everything updated perfectly and I did not lose any applications or data and I am still rooted with perfectly functioning su apps.

Same here. I went from 4,22 to 4.24 using RA recovery with no issues. This was after many failed attempts at doing the the same via either CWM recovery 3.0.0.5, or stock recovery extracted from the 4.22 download.

Hadn't thought of trying RA, but I am a RA convert now.

Good to hear! I think the keys to successful updates while still keeping root and all apps intact are to use Amon RA 2.3 and the latest superuser apk (post #44).

Re: [GUIDE]Updating to rooted gingerbread WITHOUT flashing a new

I havent been a fan of the stock rom since cm, it does everything better than the stock rom.

Anyways my question about this is, why does moving the ota and installing it manually make it keep root access but with ota update it removes it.

Also if anyone happens to know, is it worth updating to the latest radios. I have read tons of posts where updating radios screwed with their wifi and 4g. I dont have a 4g signal here but i def dont want to break my wifi. Are there any performance improvements? I dont want to create any unneccesary problems if it working fine now.

Appreciate any help!

Re: [GUIDE]Updating to rooted gingerbread WITHOUT flashing a new

Ok I got a problem I did everything correctly it flashed and all but the problem I am having is I can't install apps from market . What I mean is it downloads the app but during the install the phone frezes and reeboots to the 4g splash screen , I have turned off fast boot thinking it was that but still does it , I can't install any apps to remove the p36image . Anyone know what i did wrong ?

Re: [GUIDE]Updating to rooted gingerbread WITHOUT flashing a new

es file explorer I had to go into settings and make sure that I had applied root user settings for the file explorer but then the file was easily moved to sd card when rebooting into clockwork to apply zip it fails and I get a error log for cwm, is there another place to download and apply this 2.3.5 update?
