Hangout ans SMS notifications

I just bought a new Mazda 3 with built in SMS playback. The problem is that it works only with SMS messages and not with Hangout ones. So when my daughter on Android or my wife on iOS "text" me (they both use Hangout) I do not benefit from my car's sms playback feature. Can I force Hangout to output messages as if they were true sms messages?

That's a good question, many cars have the same problem.
Is hangouts set as your default text messaging app?

I should have mentioned that. Yes, Hangout is my "sms" app. I also use a Moto X 2014.
