Hangouts + contacts

I just got my 6P. While setting it and testing text messages, I notice there either going SMS - Messenger or to Hangouts. I opened up hangouts and set merge conversations. On my Moto X I just used Hangouts and switched between when needed.

It did not merge conversations. Also in hangouts when I start a new conversation, it shows I have no contacts. When starting a new conversation previously it would see all my contacts from my gmail account. No ideas why hangout does not pull my gmail contacts?

Disregard, I believe I fixed it. I set hangouts to be default, then went back and set messenger to be default. Now contacts are showing up.
