Problems during USB file transfer!

Have unlocked G2 running 4.4.2 (still trying to de-bloat it, unfortunately have not been able to gain root access).
Laptop is Acer Aspire 5 running Windows 8.1.
When I connect the two via USB and try to move music files (the phone automatically comes up on my device list on the laptop, MTP mode is switched on, USB debugging is off), the file transfer starts, and then about 10 seconds into the transfer, the phone refreshes and announces that it's connected by USB again. I can't seem to get that to stop and on the other end, the Windows file transfer dialog tells me that the device is unresponsive or has been disconnected. This happens whether I transfer 1 folder of songs or 10.
I thought that there might be an issue if notifications from apps came up while transferring, so I closed any apps that typically do that (Skype, Facebook), on the phone.
Anyway, has anyone had this issue of the G2 repeatedly disconnecting during file transfers? Advice appreciated.
