Re: SGS4 with straight talk hard bricked

Volume Down+Home+Power. When you get the warning, go to download mode, don't reboot.

Use Odin and a copy of your phone's ROM from SamMobile Firmwares (enter the model number, not S4) to reflash.

If you can't even get to download mode, look on ebay for Samsung Download Dongle. The 88 cent ones are the same as the $4 ones, so buy the cheap one. Short instructions - remove the battery, plug the dongle into the microUSB connector and replace the battery. If it doesn't power up, press the power button.

If it's still dead, take it to a repair shop - it may need hardware replaced.

Re: SGS4 with straight talk hard bricked

That's the reason for the dongle - bringing a hard-bricked Samsung S series (I don't know if it works with other Samsungs) to download state. If it's even harder bricked, only a JTAG box will bring it back. If it's hard-bricked because of hardware failure (usually something really bad on the motherboard) nothing but replacing the bad hardware will fix it.

"Hard brick" merely means that the phone acts as if there's no battery in it. No matter what buttons you push in what order or combination, nothing happens. It doesn't define why. (A soft brick means that the phone does something, but not what it's supposed to.) Technically, I guess a phone with no battery is hard-bricked - but the solution is to put the battery back in.
