I think PhoneArena put it best:
iOS is not an actual OS at all. Much like webOS, it is basically an application launcher with some firmware to support hardware interaction. It is good for those that want minimal upkeep and that want stability. Part of the cause that brings stability to iOS is what also restricts you from customizing the phone further. Less moving parts means less parts to break, right? It gives all the benefit of an app-based smartphone with none of the hassle of a smartphone OS such as BB OS, WinMo, WP7, Android, Symbian, etc. The phone itself is a beautiful balance of software and hardware, making the experience smooth and trouble-free. In theory, at least.
I personally see nothing against the iPhone as a smartphone for either novice-tech people, or someone whom cannot afford the time to mess around a lot with the device. It is actually a great phone. I, however, will never wittingly buy anything from Apple because I detest their practices. Apple made themselves big in the wake of Steve Jobs getting tossed under the bus after a larger software giant took all his ideas and ran. However, in the beautiful phoenix story there is a rotten ending: In the process of rising from the ashes to become great, Apple has become the same type of company that created them. Greedy, elitist, underhanded, and overall arrogant. All billion dollar corporations are the same, including them.
Besides, if a stranger comes up and hands you a half-eaten piece of fruit and tells you its "game-changing" and therefore charges you double what a normal piece of the same fruit costs, would you buy it?
