Have you now sworn off pre-orders?

Official release day is Friday 9-15-2017. Yet a good bit of you still have no device even though you pre-ordered early on. I've never pre-ordered. Looking forward to Friday.

Some of you have your devices but there was stress and mayhem. Your phones saw pretty much all of the U.S. You didn't receive current tracking.

Considering this experience, will you ever pre order again, whether direct, through a carrier, or BB?

Most definitely will. I pre-ordered online thru Sprint and got my phone 10 days early. No problems

No, nothing has gone wrong for anyone yet.

Here's the thing: Pre-order does not mean that you will receive it early, or even on release day. You might receive it early or on release day, but the concept of pre-order has nothing to do with that whatsoever. It's an entitled misunderstanding that makes people think that. Pre order means that you are ordering before release to ensure that you have a device reserved, whenever it becomes available to you. It also sometimes means that you can take advantage of pre-order deals.

That's all well and good except when a vendor/company sets the expectation that your pre-order item will be arrive/be available to you by or on the official release day. That does not constitute an "entitled misunderstanding".

You are correct in that nothing has gone wrong for anyone yet, because anyone that was guaranteed a pre-order Note 8 on the 15th still has ~36 hours to receive their device. That doesn't mean that people aren't "entitled" to be frustrated, disappointed, or pleased by their experience(s) which may or may not impact their desire to pre-order again.

I prefer to go into a store and leave straight away with the phone. In fact I unbox it and power it on right in front of the salesperson just to ensure I have a stable device.

I don't care about being first.

Who was guaranteed anything? How exactly was the expectation sent that it would be available before or on the official release day? Typically the language indicates that it would ship on or before the date quoted at the time of ordering. People can feel anything they want, that's not what we're talking about. I suppose we could be talking about whether or not those feeling are justified. But from everything I've seen, there's only one person so far who has a legitimate issue, and that is that her phone shipped 10 days early and so it's going to a place she's not going to be because she was expecting it to ship tomorrow, not last week. That I understand being frustrated by.

Everything I've been able to find has indicated that most of the first people to pre-order would have their devices shipped on 9/13. Then they actually started shipping some units on 9/4, which caused confusion. But most of those people were probably happy to receive it early.

I cannot speak for anyone else's experience, but, in my case, I was told by the associate at the AT&T Store where I made my pre-order on Aug 26th, and subsequently by a manager at that store that my pre-order would be shipped to me and that I would receive my pre-order by the 15th. As of today, I still have not received shipping notification.

Other than Samsung sending out tracking numbers 2 days too early I had a smooth experience. Got my phone sooner than expected and definitely enjoyed the extra days with the device. I was coming from the Nexus 6P.
I also really enjoyed using the device before official release date. Noone noticed but there's an extra satisfaction feeling when using a device before it's been officially released.

What's the store have to say now?

I won't be able to return to the store until tomorrow. When I called customer service last night to check status, (my order is not showing in any interface I have access to as a customer) they created an escalation for me because, according to the CSR, it should have already shipped.

There are customers that ordered on the 24th and have yet to receive a shipping confirmation. So no it's not the customer's fault. All seems to be going well from those who pre-ordered from anywhere BUT samsung.com

The whole point of a pre-order is to receive the phone on release day and not have to risk not finding any in stock at local retailers. Samsung didn't even seem to follow the order of pre-order since people from varying pre-order dates seem to have received their device either before or on release date while other, some who ordered on the very first date, haven't even received a shipping confirmation. The very least Samsung could have done was send out an email explaining the delays. I will likely pre-order again, but not directly from samsung, unless they are offering an unbeatable promotion.

I went into one of the Verizon wireless stores on Labor Day to preoorder. To my surprise, I received it in two days. I will definitely order again.

It most definitely is. Pre-orders are meant to guarantee the buyer a product, typically high demand products are hard to find in store, hence the idea of a pre-order. However, samsung.com screwed up so bad that many who ordered on 8/24 now have to wait after release day and some have even cancelled their orders and will be purchasing them at local retailers today. Thus, defeating the purpose of the pre-order. Do enlighten me on what you're concept of pre-order is?

Is it Samsung screwing up or individual carriers?

I would have to assume it's Samsung. All cases of preorders made on 8/24 that haven't arrived by the expected day were ordered on samsung.com

A lot are for carrier versions as well, not the unlocked version. I love Samsung products, just disappointed with the way pre-orders were handled for all of those who ordered within the first couple of days. Some of us at least got an apology email and confirmation they will ship next week, but seems like most of the people who ordered the unlocked version (some on 8/24), and have not had an order update to this day, haven't even received the apology email. Hopefully Samsung improves over the years to come.

Correct that they are meant to provide reassurance that you will receive a product, but it is not a guarantee and it is not guaranteed to be received prior to the release date or on the release date, or anything like that. They might provide an estimated ship date, but that's the extent of it. So receive a product, yes, receive it early or by a certain date, no.

"Pre-order does not mean that you will receive it early, or even on release day. You might receive it early or on release day, but the concept of pre-order has nothing to do with that whatsoever. "

Pre-ordering a product simply means that you are reserving a product.

"A pre-order is an order placed for an item that has not yet been released. The idea for pre-orders came because people found it hard to get popular items in stores because of their popularity. Companies then had the idea to allow customers to reserve their own personal copy before its release, which has been a huge success.

Pre-orders allow consumers to guarantee immediate shipment on release, manufacturers can gauge how much demand there will be and thus the size of initial production runs, and sellers can be assured of minimum sales. Additionally, high pre-order rates can be used to increase sales further."

Seems as though I am not the only one to assume pre-order means priority in terms of the day in which it will SHOULD be received (AGAIN especially for those who ordered within the first couple of days). If that was not the case, there would be no point to pre order. We could just go to the store today and buy it? I can attest to Note 8's being in stock at a number of best buys and mobile stores around me. For everyone else who waited to pre-order on a later day, it's expected to possibly have delayed shipments. AGAIN, the biggest problem with this preorder is that many ordered on the 24th and haven't gotten anything, while many that ordered during September already have theirs. This pre-order was bull**** for many, and that's the sad truth. Already read of a couple cases where orders made on 8/24 have been cancelled and customers have obtained it elsewhere. Here's hoping Samsung steps up their game for their next flagship pre-order. Who can blame them though, they are undoubtedly acting in a very business oriented fashion. As one upset customer mentioned on another thread,

"The reason Samsung is putting their preorder customers on the lowest priority is because they know we really want the phone and the trade-in discounts (especially for previous Note 7 owners) so the chance of us cancelling is low. They rather prioritize their stock to the carriers and retail so they can sell as much as possible before the new iPhone comes out. Samsung is always about making maximizing profits with little regards for business ethics and especially not customer service."

it's hard to disagree. But seems like orders are slowly making progress, so all is well except for those who cancelled only hours or minutes before they sent out the massive email apologizing. Mainly due to the lack of information and the poor customer service.

Even with that situation, it's pretty risky to pre-order something this valuable when you know you will be here or there during the time frame. If I knew I was going to be somewhere else within about a week or two of the device release, I wouldn't chance it and I'd just wait and hit up a store.

The problem with your claim is that if that truly was the whole point of a pre-order, what about people who "pre-ordered" yesterday? How can they logistically have the phone on release day today?
