I'm just curious how many out there have already rooted their VZW GS3, and, for those that haven't yet, if you're planning on it.

P.S. For those that aren't sure where to look for how to root yet, look at this thread on XDA Developers forum, courtesy of invisiblek.

I did already to remove the ongoing notification, remove bloatware, and for some apps that need root access

After getting it yesterday I am very pleased how it runs. I will eventually root mainly to get Titanium Backup back and keep my apps and their data backed up. Don't know if I will mess with Roms and Kernels like I did on Fascinate, this phone doesn't need that much tweaking for my personal use.

I'd like to do it once I get my phone to remove the wifi harassment, bloat, and use any programs that require root.

As a new Android user, is there any real downside to rooting? Can I not use OTA updates from VZW? Really the only thing from them that I will care about is unlocking global capability (traveling to Europe in December) and then any JB update. My amateur understanding is that I would only affect that ability by flashing the phone.

Pretty much this. I hope I don't 'need' to load custom roms like I did on the Fascinate. Guess time will tell how many months we have to wait for JB. While rooting and loading custom roms was fun I do use my phone and get tired of tweaking it everytime I try a new rom.

I agree on the custom ROMs. I think rooting is still a good idea, just to remove all the crap they put on there, but I don't see any need to flash custom ROMs with this phone. I actually like the new TouchWiz.

I pre-ordered my phone, got it in the mail, yada yada, and I have to say I'm extremely impressed by this phone. Just to clarify, I ordered the 16GB Pebble Blue model as an upgrade to my Samsung Fascinate.

As I said, my immediate reaction was very good; The phone is fast, the screen is great, even the headphones they included out of the box are good quality.

Then I decided I wanted to check out how fast the phone could load web pages on my home internet via the stock browser. So I swipe down on the notification bar, and much to my dismay, my WiFi quick button is gone--replaced by some substandard ongoing notification that only shortcuts me past literally 2 touches of the screen.
I then run my browser test (my opinion of that is irrelevant as I ended up getting Opera Mobile again anyway) and play with the notification bar some more, hoping there is a way to get my beloved button back. Come to find out that the quick buttons in the NB actually scroll, so for the life of me now I can't figure out why my button has been taken away.
Now, to add insult to injury:
I decided to test out Shazam on the new phone, but using the LTE data because when was the last time you had your home WiFi in your car while you were listening to the radio? I had Shazam on my Fascinate (some reason didn't always work) but the Play Store decided that it was going to go ahead and auto-re-download all my apps (which was awesome to see google's foresight pay off btw). A little pop-up came up telling me that there was WiFi around me that I could connect to, and asked if I would I like to connect to it. I told it no, remind me later, but it spurned me to go disable the "Notify Me" option under wifi settings. After all that, turns out Shazam works like a champ.
I then open up the Google Navigation app so I can test the GPS in the phone. That damned wifi window popped up again, keeping in mind I had literally just turned off the "Notify Me" option. As it turns out, no matter what I do, this little window will not go away...

So, for those that just read my long anecdote, the purpose of my post is about to be clear: I voted "I'm on the fence." The only way I'd root my phone is if I could return the notification bar quick buttons to their rightful place since the other US carriers have their WiFi button intact. Obviously, by putting this button back in the right place, I'd want that ongoing notification to disappear as well, along with that pop-up asking me to be sure I'm not an idiot.
If I cannot return things back to their rightful places then there really is not much point in rooting the phone other than maybe getting back the freedom of the file system not being locked down for ES File Explorer and getting rid of the bloat apps. Overall this phone really is a champ, no reason to put anything super custom on there, it's just been crippled by Big Red.

On a separate note, because of this WiFi button thing, I've decided to rack up some huge data usage on this phone. I've got the unlimited data grandfathered in, and with my Fascinate my average monthly data usage was less than 1.5GB. Since getting this phone and being denied something so simple as my button, I've racked up 11.2GB (got the phone July 9) by streaming Netflix, HD Youtube, emails, facebook, etc. Essentially anything that I'd normally do on my PC I've been doing on my phone. Since LTE is so fast I've been able to do it no problem, and no throttling yet.

For the wifi button you mean a quick toggle like shown below? All things are possible to those that root. Check out the US specific S3 forum on XDA. All that you ask for on mods are there.

I don't get why the wifi button is not in the notifications, when everything and it's mother are in there. I simply installed a widget to control this, but it's just another widget on my phone....

Coming from Gingerbread, having ICS is awesome. I voted on the fence, because as it is now, this phone is the $#!t. But if Jellybean ports start coming to this phone, and Samsung and Verizon play their sweet time with updates, then the answer is clear :p not to mention all of the cool apps you can use when you're rooted ;)

I rooted to remove the boat ware, and that's it.
