Okay, let's go over all of this... I'm relatively new to hacking, and try as I might, I haven't found much of anything in the answer department. This has left me very confuzzled.

I have a brand-new Virgin Mobile Optimus V with a ZV5 baseband and stock Android 2.2.2 Froyo. It has been rooted using GingerBreak 1.2, but that is the farthest I have gotten. My old phone needs to be sent in since it's busted, and I will get to that after my new one is ready to go. I have a week to get the old one back.

For the operation, I am trying to follow these sets of instructions:
Installing a Custom Operating System on an LG Optimus V with Cyanogenmod | Technology Plus
http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...-how-simplified-root-recovery-custom-rom.html

First, Recovery. Even after abusing ROM Manager, I keep getting the stock recovery. After ROM Manager failed, I decided that I want this:
http://forums.projectopencannibal.n...pen-touch-v2-0-2-(latest-update-08132012)-42/

To get that, I need this:
[GUIDE] Flash any recovery easily on the phone using flash_image - xda-developers

I renamed the .img to "recovery.img" - it's in the main index of /sdcard. But... when I crack an ADB Shell...
Code:
$ su
su
# mount -o remount, rw /system
mount -o remount, rw /system
# cd /sdcard
cd /sdcard
# cp flash_image /system/bin
cp flash_image /system/bin
# cd /system/bin
cd /system/bin
# chmod 777 flash_image
chmod 777 flash_image
# cd /sdcard
cd /sdcard
# flash_image recovery /recovery.img
flash_image recovery /recovery.img
[1] + Stopped (signal) flash_image recovery /recovery.img
#

My su binary is up to date. My Superuser is up to date. I have tried this with both an ADB Shell and a Terminal Emulator. Same result. Terminal Emulator will sometimes spring up "Illegal Operation" as well. What the hell is this?

I also need to know more about S-OFF. How do I check that? Do I need recovery for HBOOT?

After recovery is taken care of, I want this ROM:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...2-rom-kernel-mirage-cm7-2-iho-07132013-a.html

What's the best way to flash it? ROM Manager hasn't been friendly to me.. so...

Yeah, I am lost. Any help here would be appreciated!

Follow this guide to the letter, you'll be golden ...http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/697813-how-install-flash_image-flash-recovery-rom-theme.html

Then read this for F.Y.I.http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/419080-truth-about-rom-manager.html

That first guide is absolutely noob proven, if you read it over a few times to familiarize your self with it. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, this forum is loaded with very friendly and knowledgeable people that will help.

Good luck ;-)

Read ALL the stickies as far as anything ROM/Recovery related. You shouldn't have any problems.....DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER!!

The ROM gets flashed via Recovery---NO OTHER APP !!

Thank you very much!

I replaced the flash_image file I had with the one in the topic you linked. That turned out to be the problem. I have a legit recovery now! :D

Going to see if I can flash the ROM itself later on. Sort of complex, but I definitely need to see what all I can understand before I do it. I don't want a brick.

Thanks a lot, once again :)
