Having issues getting my HTC One to Sync with my computer

Just purchased a used HTC One M7 been having issues getting it to sync with my Macbook and my friends Windows computer. HTC customer service is claiming the issue is because I'm not using the original cable. Just wanted to see if anyone can confirm this before I go ordering an OEM HTC cable. I don't understand why that would make a difference.
