Having trouble with my little notification numbers

Been playing around with my new S9+. Somehow I've changed how my notification numbers act. 2 things:
1). If I have an email notification and I open my email app, then close the app and go back to my home page, the little number is no longer there. I don't have to open any emails for this to disappear.
2). If I swipe down from my home page to read my notification icons, and press clear... ALL little notification numbers from ALL apps disappear.
Any ideas? TIA

That is normal operation for Android Oreo 8.0.
