HDMI out - "user generated content only" ??

I really hope this is temporary, as it's ludicrous bordering on criminal. If I purchase a digital movie I ought to be able to watch it on a TV if I want (I'm not even asking to move the file around or make copies...just watch the damned thing on another screen!).

My thought was that perhaps HDCP (the copy protection that is used on hi-def media) simply hasn't been implemented yet. Can't understand why that should prevent the playing out of standard or reduced def material, but either way I'd hope that in the non-too-distant future that it will be an HDCP-eabled device that can play out movies we buy online. Otherwise it's a stupid feature and I won't be buying any movies digitally at all, I'll just rip them and then they will appear to be user-created content (and I really don't want to have to bother, but permanent blocking of play out would be ridiculous).

I haven't bought the cable yet but I'm fairly certain that side loaded content can be can viewed at least. That covers probably most of my cases for it. I'm not too disappointed. I wouldn't hold my breath on it being temporary though, unfortunately.

Digital copies can be played. I have a couple i synced to my x with salling media sync, and they play fine through the hdmi out.

With all the hype they put out about the Blockbuster app, they really shat on us with this. Lead us on like a tramp...

The formula of Blockbuster app + HDMI output = movies on my tv seemed as sure a bet as 1 + 1 equaling 2. Gah

I mean its not a huge deal, but come on.

ripping ftw

Any converted mp4 is a "user generated file", how could anything have detection of a stolen movie or tv show?

What they mean is that if there's any DRM on the file it won't play. I buy DVDs and convert them to DRM-free MP4s and they play just fine via HDMI. Blame the content owners for the DRM-enabled HDMI out, Motorola just needs to play ball with them or suffer lawsuits and fines.

As an added datapoint, the DLNA client can also play video out the HDMI interface, you can convert some DRM-enabled streaming formats to DLNA using things like PlayOn. Well it could us HDMI if could play video, I've not had much luck getting video to actually play on my Droid's DLNA client so I'll probably hope for the best with next week's update.
